Definitely a Blue Jaw / Hawaiian Black hybrid. Put some notes above each picture.

Hawaiian/Indian Trigger and bluejaw hybrid sounds not too far fetched. Look at the darkness on the top of the trigger, triggers don't fade like that, more of a whole body thing, so that's it natural colors. They are different genus, so maybe/maybe not.

Definitely is a hybrid of something. $2,000 nice? Not me now, if I did have the bread, maybe. It definitely is prettier then all those retarded, sickly looking koi tangs... :rolleye1: :rolleye1: :rolleye1:

A cross genus hybrid would be VERY atypical. Certainly theoretically possible, but very unlikely. Can we get a better pic? Fish ID with beer goggles is not easy.

My guess is Xanthichthys caeruleolineatus also, this sp is found at the depth of below 180 ft in HI and therefore very expensive and dangerous to collect. The photo fron rachenbrazil's link is much more red in the body then any I've seen, in fact the ones I've seen were a dull brown above the bluish white stripe, but the $2000 price is about what the 3 I've seen for sale went for. I've always been told common name is blue lined trigger.

Has anyone ever seen a photo of a Xanthichthys lima? Ive not a clue what one looks like, but Im pretty familiar with the rest of the genus. There are, after all, more than just blue throats, sargassums, goldbacks, and crosshatch triggers in that genus...

1) triggers turn corals and LR into sand, i wouldnt put one in a reef tank.
2) i personally wouldnt pay $2,000.00 for any fish. ive seen black tangs on www.liveaquaria.com for $3,000.00, my LFS showed me his cost sheet for the exact fish...$800.00!!!

I do not believe it is uncommon for a 300% markup on fish from wholesale cost to retail cost.

LFS needs to take into account care/space/shipping/loss "insurance" (you also have the rareness premium in this case). For your average fish, that's not much real markup in terms of actual dollars when you get down to it.

Now on an expensive fish, that is a ton of markup in absolute dollars.

I've seen one X. lima, though it had been dead in a bag for almost a day and decomposed a bit. It looks more like a Sargassum with some extra stripes. The range of that fish is also extremely limited, and the people collecting in those countries are not going deeper than 15m for any fish.

Yeah, I knew the local was very limited, but there has been a small spike in fish being exported out of there lately, so it just made me think. Thanks for the description though.. was just a thought

It is not a sargassum. Even in the bad picture you can see the crosshatch pattern (not saying it is a crosshatch though). Also the tail on sargassum is RED not orange. And the body is bluish not usually as bright blue as the pic given, but still not gray.
