2-400w overkill for a 75g?

Im getting 2 400w lumenarc pendants/pfo ballast for cheap and i wanted to know if it will be too much to put on my 75g?

Thanks much

It depends what you want to keep.

I have seen 400 watters on shallow frag tanks. 400's will allow you to get 20k bulbs and get the intensity of 10k 250w bulbs.

The ushio 20ks are very nice especially when paired with a few t5's, simply amazing color.

Thats what i was thinking. I figured it would be ok but i wasnt 100%

On one hand, going 250 vs 400 will save you money (on equip and the electric bill). On the other, 2x400 will futureproof your equip to handle a 120 or even 150tall should you ever upgrade in the future.

P.S. I love my 120. (which could really use some 250 MH's).

haha. Why do i want to do what ma man? Raise them up? Ifigured the lights would be nuts and didnt know what levels i would want to keep them at.

hehe. I just wanted to use your screen name in my post. Personally, I think it's overkill unless you have plans for a future upgrade. That's a lot of electricity

Actually most good 10k 250w like XM/EVC run circles around most 400w 20k bulbs in PAR but 400 watters do allow you to use 20k bulbs without giving up as much intensity as going with 250w 20k. that being said I dont think its a given its overkill but its certainly unneccessary as there are plenty of nice looking 250w options that will easily do the job.

Ya i wold definatly go with 250w but im getting 2-400w/ballasts for about 200$ and they are in GOOD condition so i figure it would be worth it in the long run(upgrades)

haha, ya i use granny in all my crap. Xbox live / email...ect ect haha.
onefastgranny <<< lol. everyone thinks its nuts considering im 23.

Overkill yes, but will it work / be ok?

I keep one 400 watt 20k above my 160 gallon 48" x 48" tank and the light is intense. I guess you could probably acclimate light intensive corals to it but when you add new frags you might end up bleaching them. I think two 250 watts would be better or just go with T5s.

I have 175 watt iwasakis on my 75 and they are too bright for many of my sps corals. If you do run 400's, stick with 20ks.

I've got two 250s over a 30in. deep tank and all is well with my SPS, LPS and softies. The 150gal I'm upgrading to, will have three 250s. The money you're going to spend running the 400s is not really worth it, IMO. If I was getting a SWEET deal on something like that, I'd stick em' in the closet until I had a tank I could justify the expense for. But, it's your electric bill and your call. :D

I had three hamilton 400w above my 250 and it was too much. It would burn up the coral. The tank was only 21" deep. I would go 250w JMHO
