2 baby hippo tangs?

OK. In the past I have asked if a hippo & yellow tang will get along in my 92 tank. Most every one said yes.

OK I went to my LFS and he had 3 types to chose from. Baby hippo tangs (about 1" each), med hippo tangs (about 3 to 4"), and big hippo tang (over 6").

The big tang is out of the question, but I'm leaning toward the baby tangs. The med tang didn't have good color but the baby tangs where bright blue.

My question, is it OK to add 2 baby tangs into the same tank? Right now he has 3 in a 20 gal tank and they look like they all get along.

Or should I just get 1 baby tang? They may start fighting as they get older.

Just don't know.. any help?

I would just add 1 baby blue tang. Tangs of the same speices will fight when they are older. If you want to tangs make sure they have differnt body shapes.

i have seen many people with mulitple blues. you would be fine, but they wil end up getting to big for that tank.

They will be fine if they are small for about two years then you will need a bigger tank even if you keep only one.

I would go with just one baby tang. Blue tangs are a bit scary for me. If you have a quarantine tank I would definately quarantine them first.

I just added a 2" Hippo Tang to my tank with a 5" yellow already established in there. The yellow chases the hippo out of his territory briefly but pretty much leaves him alone other wise. The thing is though, they're all different, so yours may not react the same. I would find a medium Hippo with good color some where. The fact that the LFS's medium one didn't have great color doesn't say much for it's health. The small ones are not as strong and less likely to thrive if it ends up being a stressful situation.

You will not need to upgrade to a bigger tank. :)

IME with these fish i disagree esipically in a corner tank...3ft length i believe...not good for the fish long term.

Just keep in mind that if you don't plan on upgrading to a larger tank, you will have to find at least one of them (maybe both) a new home when they get big. That can be hard to do, cause if you are anything like me, you get really attached to your fish. Especially if they have a cool personality.

I had a baby hippo with a yellow and they were fine after the first day or two. They became best buds after a while. They were such a nice combo!

I have a pair of hippos in my reef tank that were introduced as a pair of less than 1" each. They are now over 4" each and they get on very well. As long as you provide them with plenty of hiding places and enough tank space, you should'nt have any problems. As with all tangs, provide them with plenty of greens (nori etc.) and they stay healthy and content in the right conditions.
