2 mp10s or 1 mp40

I have a 110 gallon that im about to pit water in for the first time and I want to do this right. My question is for my 110 gallon tank (60Lx18Wx24H) would it be better if I went with 1 MP40 or 2 MP10's. Let me know what everyone thinks.

You will need two mp40. Depending on what you want to keep just turn them up or down. Mp10 may not stick to glass depending on how thick your glass is. Really no brainer you need 2 mp40.

2 MP40's for sure. I know for my 165 gal tank. I will be using my 2 MP40's and possibly supplement 2 MP10's.

Your tank will do well with just one MP40 to start, mine did in a 120 mixed reef w/SPS and LPS for a year did well. But a second is absolutely ideal and the way to go. I am so happy I finally got my second, major difference. Also two can be run @ or under 80% and will not make any noise.

Okay I figured that. Considering ill need two ill have to start with less expensive powerheads and upgrade later. I want to do everything right up front but I plan on getting 3 AI sol units and a Neptune Apex so I think two MP40s will be out of my price range. One will work to start? Im hoping that my tax return comes through and will allow me to get eveything I need.

On a different note...how does changing the optics on an AI unit affect the spread? Im about do finish plumbing my tank and install it in my living room. I eventually plan on getting a 4th AI unit but figure 3 would be a good start with proper coral placement. I was wondering if o could get more coverage with three units and different optics on the units. Any suggestions here?

Well, factory the AI sol has 40 degree and 70 degree optics together. You can change them to what you want. The 70 degree optics will have more of a spread compared to 40 degree optics.

As I said before you will do well with only a single MP40 then upgrade to a second one later. What do you plan on using the controller for?

I like the idea if having everything tied into one unit. Plus im kind of a tech nerd and I like the idea of being able ti control certain functions with my DROID phone. RO me it just seems like a good investment so I want it set up with the start of my tank.

I started out with one MP40 in my 90 and saved up or a second. Chances are a single MP40 would be plenty of flow for you at first since I doubt you'd want to fill it with SPS right away. By the time the tank it mature and stable enough for demanding coral you could have saved up for that second pump.

A cheaper pump on the opposite wall could be an option too until you can get the scratch together for another MP40.

I've got a 90 too and am considering running a single MP40, my tank is all softies and LPS currently, since you've already tried I'm curious what your opinion is. I really don't want to spend $900 on water pumps for a non-SPS heavy 90.

Would a single MP40 in a 90 gallon be sufficient if you're not going to have SPS?

As it is right now I've got 2 Evo 1400s which add up to about the same amount of GPH total but I've been having trouble positioning them so that I get good water movement in the tank and I don't have 1 or 2 spots with way way to much current. Now that I've started to get my tank filled with corals it seems there's no where I can point them while running both that doesn't result in at least 1 coral looking like it's get way to much linear flow. Even pointing them right at each other results in heavy linear flow in the center of the tank.

i would say almost the same would apply, start with 1 see how you like it. the current will reach the far side, and more impressive is the undertow that the vortechs generate. I currently have 2 MP40's on my 90, but mine is a SPS tank.
I have a single MP10 on my Softie/LPS tank (BC29), and love watching the corals all dancing in flow.

So considering that my tank is literally brand new without any corals or fish at all is this purchase necessary up front or something I can upgrade to later? I plan on getting three to AI units and a Neptune apex. Would normal powerheads work to start and then once I have nice corals I could upgrade to the vortech units. Im just trying to plan out bow much I have to spend a.d what would be the best for my tank at this time

Although his tank is 110 gallons, its still five feet long. Two MP40s or a few Tunzes would work. One MP40 is not sufficient.
