what is your opinion about buying LR from someone who is tearing down an exisiting tank? Do you stay away because the LR could have been exposed to copper or do most people take their chances? Seems you can save yourself alot of money buying LR from someone tearing down a tank , but is it worth the risk especially if you decide to do coral?

I think this topic should stir some debate!!

If you can get it cheap, then go for it. Worried about copper? Test for it before you buy it. If he has flatworms, flatworm exit it. Anything else you can take care of later. There is nothing wrong with used live rock, you could end up buying it at your LFS without knowing that it is used. New or used, there is always the chance of getting something "unwanted." If the price is right, go for it.

I agree, if its a good price, go for it. The only thing is established LR can have established hitchhikers so i'd dip it if i were you. I recently added a piece of established lr and it had about a foot long eunicid. Luckily, i saw it and took the rock out and after 10 minutes in reef dip, the worm popped out dead and the lr was back in the tank.

I definately agree. There is nothing wrong with second hand LR. It all comes back to price.
