2 new Gigantea

Well, the last time I tried one of these guys, the result was disasterous in the first 48 hours.

That was a year ago and I have new tank now and decided to try again.

This time around, I wanted to wait a bit before even admitting I was trying again. So, here are the pictures 2 1/2 weeks into my new experiment:

Here's what they looked like when I first brought them home:

Aside from the blue sliding a bit to the middle and the green deciding to move to the top, they seem pretty happy. Mouths look good and everything.

With the exception of having to keep other corals out of the greens path (it was like watching lava flow, there's nothing you can do about except get stuff outta its way), they have been wonderful additions to the tank!

wow the green gig. is huge! the blue one looks a lot larger in the last pic the second, but the blue is still really cool. did you get them at your LFS or an online source? (haha im sorry to mooch)

Got them from a chicago LFS that had a few dozen of them.

The blue one is a bit more compact in the latest picture, but it does vary from hour to hour. The green one also appears a bit smaller, but in the original picture, it was all piled on one side of the rockwork. Now, with it perched on top, your only seeing half of it. It's equally big (if not bigger) on the other side of the tank.

Beautiful Gigantea's!! I just lost my green carpet today and not sure how the blue one will fare. Your carpets are considerably larger than mine were. I mail ordered mine as well, hopefully the LFS saves some stress on them.

I'm only two hours away from Chicago so I'm down there fish/coral shopping all the time. I was fortunate to be able to see them in person and pick the healthiest specimens.

The Schor claimed these were coming in from a newer location and were proving to be much hardier than the ones from a year ago.

I sure hope he's right!

Do you have any suggestions how to get the yellow/green to stop moving? I thought they liked to be at the bottom with their foot tucked into the sand and rocks. I was surprised to see him at the top of the tank, but he seems happy.

Sorry, no suggestions. It appears that you have halides. Am I right? what wattage?

I have (3) 250W SE 12K Reeflux MH lights in Lumen Bright 3 pendants (about 17" above the water) running CoralVue ballasts.

My best guess was that he was looking for more light.

The tank is 30" tall.

FWIW, my bulbs are about 8-10" off the water, and the giganteas are about 10-12 below the surface. I would go making any drastic changes though. These creatures take quite awhile to adjust, and you may not see any negative (or positive) reaction for weeks after any changes.

Yeah, you make me sick.. I don't even want to start thinking about Giganteas (even though they're gorgeous).

VERY NICE -------- i just got a blue purple one 2 weeks ago and it is looking better each day ---i had the same bulbs and i just changed them to 250 watt radiums and it seems to like it better --but that is just what i see with mine -- have to get a pic up of it

After I took these pictures, the blue one kept moving toward the center of the tank and wasn't necessarily looking so great.

Nothing terrible, but he had shrunk in size quite a bit and on Saturday night, I noticed him spewing a bunch of milky white junk junk.

When I got home Sunday night, he was back to his enormous size and was looking happy as could be! Then I looked closer and saw just the tip of my Poweder Blue tangs' tail sticking out of his mouth.

I guess that's the price you pay for keeping these beautiful creatures.

The photos shows the blue one as too red. It is much more blue rather than purple.

Check out the tentacles on both of his they are starting to get longer and thinner...
