2 or more tangs in a 180?

I know it is always a gamble mixing tangs (or any fish for that matter) but I have a well established 180 reef (with about 75 gallons in the sump). The tank has almost no fish in it but has plenty of rock and corals. I would really like to keep a few tangs but I can't remember which tangs mix and I was once told that yellows can be schooled but I am not sure if it is true.
My tank only has a pair of ocellarus clowns, a yellow chorus wrasse, and a mandarin. Other than the tang(s), I don't have any plans for large fish. Whatever fish I choose they must be fairly tough. I have no interest in tangs like the powder blue or achilles tangs due to difficulty keeping. There are too many beautiful easier to keep fish. My favorite is the orange shoulder tang. The kids would love to have a hippo. Or a school of 3 yellows would be real nice. Anybody have any suggestions?

With so few fish in there and the 180 being a good sized 6' tank, you have almost limitless options. The method of mixing tangs is pretty similar to any other fish - try to get ones that have dissimilar body shape/color/size and you should be good. I'd avoid the big, famously aggressive ones like Sohal and Clown, but you could pick almost anything else. 3 tangs would probably be just fine and I don't see why the three you mentioned (orange shoulder, hippo and yellow) wouldn't work.

I keep 3 in my 180, a two spot bristletooth, a mimic, and a sailfin and I have no aggression problems other than the occasional chase between the mimic and bristletooth. I think you have plenty of room for both an orange shoulder and a hippo.

I agree. I am probably pushing the envelope with the Hippo in my 120 but I have Hippo and a Kole Tang together and they show no agreesion at all. The Hippo is larger and obviously a different Body shape/color.

I also added them at the same time. I think when mixing Tangs it is a good idea to add them together.

I think both of your choices and even all 3 would work in your 180.

just watch nitrates and phosphates for your corals and all of those tangs would work but i wouldnt do a trio of yellows if you do the other two.

Thanks everyone. Maybe I will go with an orange shoulder and a hippo... maybe a yellow as well. I will likely go with some small to medium size tangs to start and let them grow up together. That seems to help with almost any other animal plus I should be able to get them a few weeks apart so I don't have to rely on the store to get all three at once.

I have a powder blue, sailfin, and yellow in my 180. They all swim together and get along pretty well. The yellow occasionally asserts his dominance, but nothing serious. The three that you want should do fine in a tank of that size. Try to get them all at the same time. If you don't the first one you put in will become dominant and probably make it difficult for the newer ones.

i have a really tiny naso, and a good size hippo and kole tang in my 6' 125 and they are all doing great. no agression and very active.

I have a 118 and I have 4 different tangs with know problems.
Purple
Sailfan
Flame fin
Orange shoulder

I have 4 currently in my 220g. Three were added at the same time (one purple and 2 yellows) and I just recently added a blue hippo. No problems at all. I will be adding one more (achilles) as my last tang.
