2 volitans?

Point ohh Eight

New member
i currently have a 100g reef and now i am setting up a 125g, it is cycled and i was just wondering if 2 volitan lionfish would work? would they beat eachother up or would they be fine together?

I have sean 5,8 or so in the same tank liveing closer to each other than not I have never sean any prob betwine each other

I kept two sub adults in my 120 and they were fine. They each hung in a different corner for the most part but never showed aggression. I had sought some advice from Frank Marini before attempting it and he didn't think there would be a problem. My tank was 60 inches, I think in a 6 foot tank you'd be good.

agreed- esp if both P Volitans are subadults. They will grow up together. A 6 ft tank at least 18" wide is perfect

The Lionfish Infestation
Lionfish are a non-native predatory fish whose numbers are expanding uncontrollably in the Caribbean region and US coast. This voracious species has no natural predator in the West, reduces young fish populations by as much as 79% in a five week period, and bears 20,000 to 30,000 eggs every four days. Left unchecked, lionfish threaten coral reef ecosystems and local pedestrians.

Run for the hills, run for your lives, we are all going to die when they grow arms and legs and are 8’ tall and eat all of us up!!!!!!
They have no natural predators which mean we will be eaten by them!!!!!!!
Al Gore said so in a documentary I saw on the SI-FI channel

Seriously though, when I saw this topic it brought this situation to mind. This is a really screwed up sisuation we have here. I've read about this in the past but it wasn't as bad as it is now. I hope they get this disaster under control.

"œLionfish are a non-native predatory fish whose numbers are expanding uncontrollably in the Caribbean region and US coast. This voracious species has no natural predator in the West, reduces young fish populations by as much as 79% in a five week period, and bears 20,000 to 30,000 eggs every four days. Left Indo-Pacific lionfish are rapidly invading the waters of the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic. Due to their population explosion and aggressive behavior, lionfish have the potential to become the most disastrous marine invasion in history by drastically reducing the abundance of coral reef fishes and leaving behind a devastated ecosystem."

"œbecome the most disastrous marine invasion in history"

"œEfforts to reduce densities of lionfish at key locations may help to lessen their ecological impacts. Recovering and maintaining healthy populations of potential native predators of lionfish, such as large grouper and sharks, may also help reduce the deleterious effects of these voracious invasive predators."
"œincreased regulation of the aquarium trade could all help reduce the risk of future invasions in the marine environment."

"œaquarium trade"

The purpose of this forum is not to determine what to do about the lionfish invasion of the Caribbean. I think you are lost. There is a forum dedicated to the discussion of issues such as this. Please see above for reef related politics. The purpose of this forum is for the care of these and other fish. We do not release our fish into the ocean anywhere. So once again, I think you are lost. And yes, many of us are all well aware of, and saddened by, the developments in the Caribbean.

Please enlighten me as to which forum is for people that "œARE LOST", not only 1x but 2x lost.

It's not very nice to say bad things to me. I have feelings too

We get defensive because we love these fish, are you are bashing them. There are other forums all for killing fish, how to spear them etc and which species are invasive, but I can't direct you to them because I ignore them.
I had a thread showing my then new Volitan, and I was so happy and still am that I got it and some jerk put on there that he kills them every chance he gets. It was just inappropriate.

Anyways, sorry to go off subject with this thread. To the OP, well you already got your answer :) I'm going to put two Volitans in my 210g.
