Im about to start up my DIY calcium reactor and have not gotten the ph monitor yet, my question is: What brand Ph test kit will read into the low range so i can properly monitor my reactor?? i plan to get the controller, but not for a little while and i would really like to get this reactor up and running.

This is a awsome DIY project.I did a DIY reactor and it was nothing like this.I noticed people are having issues with low tank PH and are worrired about the phosphates from the media. You could make a little holder and put some phosban in it,then hang it so it drips in a high flow area. This will help blow off the excess CO2 and absorb the phosphate.I made this simple phosban holder, then hung it above my sump so the effulent would drip about 8" to the sump.I also made sure it dripped near my skimmer output. It did help to keep the PH in the tank at 8.2

I was also able to make a venturi to pull the CO2 and water from the sump instead of using a feed pump.I'll try and find the pics of the DIY venturi.I ran it with a mag2 pump.I had the venturi on the intake side of the pump. Also if the mag is running loud theres probably air trapped in it.Once the air clears it's very quiet.I have the reactor off line now because I just restarted the tank after a crash last year.I'm going to build the one on this thread soon.My tank is starting to demand alot more and I'm sick of dosing everyday..hehehe

I think this thing is sweet, but have a ?. I won't have a lot of room to mount the housing that was used, but may be able to fit the tlf phos. reactor behind my stand somewhat ( I have an external overflow ) if you could use that instead. It is a touch cheaper as well. Any thought's as to why that couldn't be converted.
Thank you for the great thread, loads of info.
Chris

It's possible but a phosban reactor would hold like a 1/4 of the media one of these whole house filters do. That would make a seriousily small reactor.

I am setting up a 75g so how much media should be able to be held in in the container? I really would like to have corals like the tank pics ( cant remember the member ) that was just posted. It looks great, I know my flame hawk would love all the places to perch to.
Thank you for the help,
Chris

I've never seen a single pass CR ever. This CR works quite well as is.

Neither had I, until I read this;

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~cap/raid/careactors/waterfilter/

The main problem with the item in this link is that there are no pictures. The person who wrote the piece has a link in it as to why a single pass is good. I wasn't completely sure about the whole thing yet. I asked people about it in another thread and someone posted a link to this very thread that we are posting in right now. I will probably just go ahead and build a recirculating one like the one in this thread. It can't be bad if so many people here on RC like it.

AHHH!

My Calcium reactor has sealed shut, and I broke the handle trying to get it open. Now tell me, how does the lid come off? Any ideas on how I can get this puppy open?

had to jump on the bandwagon and build one too.
my ph is down to 7.4 but it is still dissolving the media
thanks for the great diy

I made one of these. When it was time to buy the regulator, I ended up getting a great deal on a reactor setup complete. So I have one of these for sale to anyone that wants on, without builfing it. I have everything, minus the regulator. PM me if interested. I have Mag 2, CO2 Tanks, Tubing, etc.

Bringing this one back from the dead....

Is anyone still running one of these two years later? Any best practices or lessons learned to share? Thanks!

Same here mine is at a year and a half.

I had to replace the leaky POS MAG3 for a Quiet One. Other than that this thing works great.
