2008 M.A.R.S. Frag Swap March 1st

I have a rock full of fuzzy/frilly mushrooms that vary from dull to bright green that vary in size from dime to silver dollar in size. I'd like to frag it up, how many should be included in each frag?

I have another rock full of metallic blue/purple shrooms that range in size from pinhead to a quarter. Same question for these.

Thanks.

Although we are happy to accomodate all frag sizes, I think a good rule of thumb is to make frags similair to what you would buy in a store. For shrooms, as an example, I would think 2-3 decent size shrooms is about average (give or take depending on the variety). Just use the perspective of, "if I were to get frag of these shrooms, I would expect it to have...." and you will be golden.

Happy fragging!

By the way, now is the time to start prepping your frags so that they have a good amount of time to heal over and be fully healthy come March 1. Fresh cut frags the day of the swap typically do not fair so well, so lets start the frag parties now!

Hmm... I am seeing a good excuse to get fellow reefers, corals, beer, and food together in once place. I love frag swaps!

Well I am really looking forward to this frag swap. It will be my second, Pam's being the first.

It looks like u can expect to see most of the Chico Reef Club there also. We are all very excited.

I should have asked in my last post if you need a list of our members or will our membership cards shown at the door be acceptable.

Thanks,

Melissa

Please send a member with a list. I will be doing the entrance and it would be most useful. Looking forward to seeing you and all your club there :)

So would it be ok to pay for Mars membership at the frag swap or how do I go about becoming a paid member to get the card to trade some of my corals?

You can actually pay via paypal on the MARS site. We would love to have you.

Okay, looks like we have a location confirmed, but West Sac is out. We're going to be near Madison and Fair Oaks.

paypal@marineaquarist.org

You must be a member of a reef club, but not necessarily MARS. We will ask for proof at the door.
so if you don't belong to a reef club, you can't attend. is that correct?

Our events are always open to the public and we highly encourage all to attend. The ability to participate in the actual frag swapping is what we are requiring the club membership for.

There are a lot of non-swapping fun to be had at the shin dig too, from mingling, to food and raffles, and more! Bring your friends, and their friends!

why limit participation in the frag swap to people that only belong to a club. why not make participation requirements to bringing frags or paying a fee to get into the picking process.

This was done at the swap Pam did last year. I know, I collected the money. If you did not bring a frag or frags, you could pay a fee to be able to pick.

There are lots of people that are into this hobby that do not belong to any of the clubs. sure would be a nice way to introduce new people to the club and to further the mission of MARS. Shouldn't it be about finding ways to include, not exclude.

Well really it is the club that brought people together enought to put on frag swaps to begin with. Further, it is because of members of MARS and the history of the club and other clubs that this regional frag swap was planned, organized, and executed. (Thank you!!!) :D

Unfortunately today, there's very little motivation for people to pay the nominal annual fee, $25 (works out to $2.08/month), and participate in a club now-a-days unless there's a big incentive "what's-in-it-for-me!" ticket item. I am certain that most paid members of MARS or other local club believe they get way more out of this membership than they've paid in.

I believe this frag swap is the one main thing, event, or item, that we can clearly show how being a member of a reef club can be beneficial. If we give this away without membership, then why pay to be a member of the club at all? Rhetorical question - as I am a member (well of Chico Reef Club) ;) I really believe we would be selling our club short by not requiring membership to participate in the frag swap.

Further, just one or two of the frags is probably worth the membership costs. Yeah, they brought some in - but its not like they didn't frag some off the mother colony or worse, something they don't want anymore - they're actually going to be going home with new corals, hopefully! Again, we would be selling ourselves short to not require membership of any recognized club.

Just my $.02. Not trying to start a I'm right - You're wrong thread. Just pointing out why membership is important. well, at least, why requiring it anyway. YMMV and it's really up to the people putting it on.

:D :bum:

I think membership in "a" club is a good thing. It's not exclusion, it's encouraging. It's discriminating. Discrimination is not inherintly bad. Promoting "responsible" over "quick'n'easy" is a good thing. 'Nuff said.

I think last year they had some corals bought and added in for the very fact some people were 'buying-in', i.e. participating without bringing corals. I don't imagine they're doing that this year to keep things simple.

I don't think it is an include/exclude issue. I think it is a 'support your club if you want things like this to happen' issue. :D

I may be wrong so again I'll let the frag swap coordinators state their claim. Nonetheless, I appreciate the opportunity to back up the membership requirement.

Actually we will be adding some corals to the table but we will buying some higher end colonies and fragging them up. It is not to make up for people who buy in but just to improve the level of things that people might have the opportunity to select.

The reason that we also decided not to do a buy in was to encourage people who did not have frags to swap to get acquainted with their LFS. While it has been customary in the past to do a buy in, we thought the swap and the participants would benefit more from everyone bringing frags. I know that just about every LFS in town has 10 dollar frags and some stores even have deals when you buy three or more. By doing this we are improving the level of frags and variety at the swap while also encouraging buisness to our friends and neighbors at the LFS.

As for the needing to become a member, our club survives on revenues. We are hoping to break even on the frag swap. If we turn a small profit, that would be great as well. That money will be spent to try and bring speakers such as Sanjay, Bob Fenner, and Anthony Calfo. If a profit from the swap, stemming from new membership is achieved, the new members will be aiding the ability of their club to make this a great year as far as speakers and potential future activities. Just think about it like this: If Anthony Calfo comes to speak we all benefit :)

Good points Paul. I also like the discussion taking place as it gives everyone's thoughts and ideas a chance to be heard and taken into consideration for future events.

I had intended to post pics of what I was going to bring, but since that's no longer an option, I will be hitting up the LFS for replacements to donate.
