2009 MTRC Meeting Schedule + Topics

All -- this is the thread to sign up to host a meeting in 2009, as well as suggest topics for the meetings. Bill (poolkeeper1) suggested that maybe we do some newbie topics to help folks get off to good starts and develop good husbandry skills (an excellent idea, I might add). Anyway, here is a list of possible dates for 2009. The host generally picks the date/time, although most of our meetings occur on the second weekend of each month.


February 21 or 22 - Angela Short (Topic homemade reef/fish food!)
March 14 or 15 - ?
April 11 or 12 - LFS meeting
May 9 or 10 - ?
June 13 or 14 - ?
July 11 or 12 - LFS meeting
August 8 or 9 - ?
September 12 or 13 - ?
October 10 or 11 - LFS meeting
November 14 or 15 - ?
December 12 or 13 - ? 4th Annual MTRC/NTRC Joint Meeting ?
January 16 (potential date for the Reef Expo!)

We generally have 3 LFS meetings/year. The other dates are open, so volunteer away and feel free to also post topic suggestions :)

I will volunteer for the Nov date. I will think more before I post a topic. Im not just going to throw something out there off the top of my head.

Sumps
Salinity management
pH issues
2-part
Aquarium Controllers
 
Fragging certain types of corals would be nice to learn... We could have a meeting and each person could bring what they would like to frag but cant in and they can learn how to do so...


That way the club wont have to dip into the budget to get the corals to frag..
 
You can put me down for the Sept meeting, and the subject can be put in later also, after we get a good comprehensive subject list.

well i was going to take the september meeting anyway you might let me have that one Norman. I will be straight beck from my honeymoon for the August one so i would not want to do that one. Just a thought. If not thats cool.
 
I know there are some people that would like to see the Expo held at a different time of year! Some of the reasons being Its right after Christmas ( lack of funds ) The weather ( very cold ) not good for transport of livestock or people and a slow time in general for the hobby. Just thought that a couple of months later might be an option that the people who travel from afar might be on board with along with those of us that are not thrilled with taking prized coral out in freezing cold weather to attend the Expo. Seems that a warm weather Expo might increase the attendance

And make it more appealing to the general public. I'm sure that everybody will have different opinions on this idea and may have other reasons to change the date or to not change it. This is just to bring up the idea of another time of year!
 
I do kinda hate it is so soon after Christmas depleated me! I always think I will have a pocket full of Christmas money to spend but truth is the cash gifts I recive are already pre-spent on the gifts I already gave ;).
I would like to see it get bummped back to at least mid Feb. but know one reason we have it in Jan. is to not get so close to the chattanooga swap which is in the summer. Also a Mid Feb. early March swap would be less likely to be 10 degrees and snow out a lot of folks. I know some folks bailed last year beacuse of the snow threat and driving across the platue and this year was a freezing experience! Seems like the weather is always a concern for our swaps not to mention the chance of freezing out our fraggs.
Is the main reason we host it in Jan. is to be rouphly 6 months time difference from the Chatty swap? I like getting out of the house in Jan. with cabin fever setting in and all since its so cold but wonder if a slightly warmer month would be more feasable without getting to close to another swaps time frame? Why is it in Jan? Just wondering!
 
Inquiring Minds want to know!...... I would suggest that the new board being elected could look at this, but I think the main reason was as Angela suggested, to be as far from the Chatty and Memphis swaps as we could.
 
The swap has also turned out to be very successful, and that date has worked pretty well. We actually voted to change the club bylaws to reorganize our elections to work better with the swap, so if we move the swap, we may have to change when the elections occur.
 
Hey norman just wanted to say thanks for switching with me. I am not sure of the topic yet i mean i am still a newbie and have more questions than i would have answers for anything. So i will have to think about it and do some research myself.

I agree I would like to see the expo in warmer weather. It was a blast besides my house getting flooded a few hours before I was suppose to leave but, I still had a great time. Hmmmm anyone think the Chatt or Memphis groups would rotate dates with us year by year ? Just another idea.
