200g in-wall project officially started

ok, i think it finally hit me at 1am last night.

this is a very crude drawing that i did half-asleep, but is this the design henry is referring to?

this design utilizes the basics of window/door framing, which henry suggested i mimic. did i nail it?

ps - this required no gallivanting around new constructions with a flashlight. :D

well, nobody vehemently objected, so i went ahead and picked up the lumber. i went to rp lumber in bloomington and had them cut the pieces to size (lifesaver!).

luckily we just moved to our new home not long ago and have a lot of empty rooms. wonder what my wife will say when she sees i've transformed the front living room into a deck. :D

ok, you would.

i didn't plan for that and probably won't, unless someone says that the current plan (no 2x4 bottom or tops) will not support the weight. i thought i had it all figured out. keep in mind there will be 3/4" ply covering the top.

why couldn't you point me to this stuff when i was emailing you asking for this info???

oh, and you should have a pm from me about my premium member status.

skip the top 2 pieces and you'll be sorry.

as i noted to in e-mail, i am not your personal research assistant. a little effort from you and "viola!" you found what i was talking about. i will match effort, but i will not research your tank. now my question to you is why couldn't you find this before e-mailing me and asking me to do it for you and claiming you don't have time to gallivant?

ok, so if i add 2x4s across the top, how do i tie them into the end posts?

do i sink the beams down another 3" and butt them up against the posts along with the beams, or do i run them across the very top, including the end post?

thanks...

option #1... almost.

they go across the top, but you need to alternate them, too. you will use the top two 2x4's to tie in the 4 seperate walls you make.

Benny, looks like you are pretty well along but somewhere a few pages back I saw you considered a steel stand...I have a fab shop behind my house & can design/build you about anything you want out of steel. I build race car rollcages & frames & I work as a pipe fitter & build stands for very large tanks & heavy equipment all the time. I also built a couple of the display stands at Sailfin in Champaign a couple years ago(I think they hold 30 30gal tanks). So if you decide to give up on the wood idea let me know. good luck with your project.

yo outlaw! can ya help a brother out? :p

my 320g should be delivered early feb. i was tinkering with brushed aluminum legs and such as my living room has a lot of brushed nickel in it. obviously not loaded supporting, just decoration. is this feasable?

Might be able to do something or at least send you in the right direction, give me a call tomorrow night 217-356-4873 I will be home after 5pm

i will be out of cell phone range in the UP :D

we can talk later...(assuming i don't hit a pine tree and die)

thanks for the offer on the metal stand. if i had seen this yesterday before spending $75 on the lumber, i'd take you up on it. another member local in bloomington sent me a pm saying that he's a private contractor and would be willing to come by to give his advice. i'm going to take him up on that just to make sure everything's solid with the plan.

thanks, henry, for your advice. i think you've at least got me on the right track.

ok, here is the "final" design.

i think i've got it right this time. henry?

i plan to put an extra leg in the middle, both front and back. how should i brace the bottom together? wrap arount the outer permiter with 2x4s?
