Great tank man! I give respect to how you're able to sustain a tank with just HOB filters and live rock. I want to see more sumpless tanks like yours. I believe keeping it simple and easy is what keeps us happy overall.

When do you do your water changes? every week or month? Do you use test kits? Also how did you mod the filters?

Hey thanks....Both my 5.5g, and 20g long only have HOB Filters and no sump. But my 54g corner does have overflow and sump. I usually only do water changes once a month with RO/DI water. I usually only test my water oncea month. There are many ways to modify Aqua Clear filters....(cutting impeller blades, using large sponge, making baffels inside the filter, putting something over the intake to cut down on the flow, also has a slow/fast setting on the filter itself).

Cool! So would you think I'll be good with a setup like yours for a 29g? Never seen anyone attempt a setup just like yours.

Good looking sir. If all goes as planned, my 75g is sold and I will be starting mine up in a few weeks. I will post a link to the thread when I start it.

AC HOB...

AC HOB...

Lpabsolute,

Are your AC 110s noisy? I just put one on my son's 10 gal. and I'm about ready to throw it away. It's in his room and way too loud. What's this about modifying the impeller, and does this lower the noise? Thanks in advance...Craig

I don't see a prob. with it. The only thing is that the 29 is deeper so you might not have to do mods as you will want the flow to be enough.

Hey, i've got one on the back of my 5.5g tank on my computer desk and it has no noise. I have it sitting on a piece of wood so it's not leaning on or hanging on the tank itself. This might be where you are getting some vibration noise from. Also i cut the impeller blades back. It comes with 6 blades and i cut ever other one so now there are 3. That's really about it. I left the large sponge in there, took out the plastic pieces that are on the sides and underneath the sponge. They are used to pull out the sponge. I just took them off. You could try any of these and see if it works for you. I've got two of the filters on the back of my 20g tank in my bedroom, they make noise, but not enough to notice or keep me awake at night. Good Luck

So you're saying to buy one AC 110 and mod it to a refugium however NOT to cut the U-tube since my tank is deeper?

You could go with one or even two if you want. If you had two you could have one acting as a filter and the other you could turn into a refugium....

Very nice, I'm jelous. Man, those rocks look good too, did they come out of a larger reef tank?

Not sure, someone from out of town took a bunch of LiveRock the the LFS and traded it in.
