Hey I'm looking for a 250w 20k metal halide bulb, used would be ok just want to test something out in my test tank. Has to be double ended. Let me know if anyone has one out there they don't want.

I think i have a Phoenix 14k.
Thanks for the offer but I'm looking for a more blue look, I've got a 15k right now too white for me.

I would take five.five-six up on his offer as a Phoenix 14K looks pretty good. I have a feeling your "15K" bulb is not labeled correctly.

I will tell you this, since you already have a HQI ballest, if you can change your DE socket out to a SE socket you could run the Radium 20K which is arguably the best looking light out ther. The 14K pheonix being a close 2nd. For M58 ballests it's probably the hamelton.

And yea, your photo looks like a 10K lamp.

Edit:

Wait, you have a 250 halide on a biocube 29? Serious rockstar status. That is awsome!

Hmmm I would but just watched a video that brs proved a DE bulb produced more par than a SE so I think I'll stick with the double ended. I bought a fixture last night for a very good price. The guy said it came with a ushio 20k 2 month old bulb and a hamilton hqi looks great the blue I was looking for, but looked at the bulb and nowhere does it say it's a ushio just has some lettering that says 250de/b and on the other side says korea. I like the look so much now I'm thinking about switching my other reef from t5 to metal halides just a bit concerned about power usage and somewhat the heat coming off of them.

Yea my biocube is my little test dummy [emoji28] also sorta like a quarantine.

Radium bubs are over-driven with the proper ballast; with the old style magnetic M80 (PFO-HQI, Sunlight Supply Blue Wave 2 and 7, Hamilton) Magnetic ballasts are or are being discontinued due to Federal laws if I recall correct; think of energy efficiency issues. I think MH bulbs are following suit.
Radiums are sweet and with the newer electronic select-a-watt, there's a setting for HQI or Super Lumens.
Anyway, I have a bunch of DE bulbs and some SE; I can check if any are in the 20K range; some used quite a few new.
Phoenix are supposed to cast a blue-ish crisp light where as the lower K tend to lean towards a 10K look but very crisp white, ie Giessemann 12k, Aqualine/AquaMedic 12k.
You still can find some DE Aqualine 20K for a very low price; I have some but they are CW(10k)
As in any bulb, the higher the Kelvin, the lower the PAR? Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The Radium is a prob start HQI lamp in a SE configuration.

IMO, the radium is too blue on electronic M80 ballasts as they don't run them hard enough. They are also too blue on M58 magnetic pulse start ballasts and those M58 fail to fire them at about 6 months. They are still just a little too blue on a true magnetic M80 but pleasingly so and the growth is phenomenal. Right now I am running M58 lamps on a M80 magnetic with T5HO supplemental, it's very white and almost as bright as sunlight. Meaning that when the sunlight shines through my window and hits the tank, that area is only nominally brighter than the rest of the tank.

Ryan is really sharp and knows quite a bit but there's only so much he can fit in a 30 min video. An ansi HQI/M80 250 watt ballast runs at slightly higher wattage than an ansi m58 ballest. Where the leads come out of the lamp is just cosmetics.

I don't know if that's true or not but I do know that hamelton is the only place to find new M80 ballests. I know where to find a few of the blue wave duel M80s still. I'm wondering if I should pick one up for spare or if I will be kicking myself for missing out.

Does that look like 20k ? Thought it would be more blue. Don't mind the dead acro [emoji29]

Depends on the WB setting on your camera but not really 20K.

20K designation is somewhat subjective. More of marketing. A radium “20K” is actually designated radium “B” for blue, hobbiests just call it 20k

This is my tank on magnetic M80 with radium B lamps several months back.

Whoa really nice, your tank is very nice. I think that is what I like about metal halides it gives the tank that crisp clear color with that shimmer. My other tank on t5s looks weird now.

Lamps are way too lose to the water. Aprox 8” due to the fact it is in my living room and wife design constraints.

Thanks for the complement on my tank :)

Oh ok, have you ever measured par ?
Yea I get you I myself was thinking about making a cheap canopy for now so the light won't be all over the place.
Man oh man, now I'm thinking about switching my t5s for metal halides what was I missing lol Been thru leds,t5s and first time with halides and I love the natural color they give [emoji51].

That's one thing about MH and T5, it's like loading .308. All the math has already been done ad infinitum.

Which bulb is that 20k? I didn’t think magnetic ballasts could drive 20ks.

How is the blue in RL? How blue is it?
