Ok i am back up and running ..... All the bio balls are gone! Hope I dont see any side effects after taking them out. The only reason I am a little worried is, after removing them i put them into a bucket with tank water. Then i stirred them all up until the water was dark from the buildup. I then tested for nitrates and it didnt register any. That worries me because if they were doing what they are intended to do and now i just took them all out that could cause another cycle.

Get yourself some filter socks, they will trap all that crap that your BIO BALLS were and can be removed and changed alot easier.

that was exactly what i was just thinking of making....
i want to make one that is directly below my cpr overflow...and the sock has to be able to go on and off very easy for daily cleaning.
thanks

anyone have any ideas/picture?

yeah....thats the socks i will use. I need to come up with something like the holder they sell too but it has to be enclosed so no water or salt creep mess.

Hey there, i am a fellow reefer in the area. Me and reefaquariumnut are friends and would like to come and see the tank then offer some advice that we have picked up over the years. There are things that you are doing well (refugium) and others that could use a little fine tuning, but i think with the right advice and a little push in the right direction we can get this tank up and looking great like you want. :)

sltloser...
that sounds good, dave has my number so feel free to give me a call anytime. We need to start a local reef club here in fargo. I know a lot of people who would be interested.

I have been thinking about this tank that is here in fargo at a drug store and it really is amazing. I think its a 180 and it has only four or five powerheads in it....no filtration what so ever! It has been up for several years and one of the corals, a frogspawn, is the size of a big watermelon.
this tank has a lot of what i want my tank to look like.... tons of corals and the all natural method. I know he does dose b-ionic and uses rodi water for top off. But thats it....and water changes i am assuming.
the reason i like the tank so much is because of the almost no maintenance thing. It seems the more complex the system the more work you have to do most of the time and even then you can make a mistake and have a crash.

mmmm, lead and nitrates from the start. That will produce a sweet looking tank over time as you have shown!

BAD....lol

i listed a very small amount of them above and none are any good for a reef IMO and when you read what the source of the chemicals....well lets just say...my coral/fish are not the only ones not getting tap water anymore!!!!

i have used tap water my entire aquarium keeping years and wish i would have thought to check into the test results before....wonder what my previous tanks would have looked like then!!!

now that i am not going to flood....knock on wood... i wish i could catch these damn yellow tangs.... shawn sold me larges and they were supposed to by tiny ones....and now they are not getting alone after the QTing. Any Ideas to catch them?

elegance i know the tank you're talking about. It's in the foss drug store right? the owners name is steve he's a really good i guy i go in there about once a month if i can and talk to him. His tank has been up for 13 years and is all naturally filtered, he has tried every method of filtration and finally decided to get rid of all of it. He does need some more flow in his tank becuase a few of his powerhead have gone out, i haven't seen it for a while becuase of the flood issue lately but i'm sure it still looks amazing. About the reef club, they have one in grand forks but i agree it would be nice to start one that is here in fargo. I don't have school all week so maybe i'll be able to stop over if u have time and we can bs for a while.
