220 gallons of soup...

I come home after work and my tank is 92 degrees. It appears the controller on my chiller died. I don't know how long the tank was pretending to be a slow cooker. I didn't notice the problem early before I left for the day to run some errands before work.:mad2:

I think that somewhere in the gospel of Murphy's Law there is the direct correlation between the corals that you love and the things that don't survive.

It's to early to tell just how bad it is going to be... The torches, hammer and frog-spawn I believe are toast. A few of the acros have lost their vivid color...

I would continue this note but I believe I will go play in traffic now...

I understand your pain. I hope everything comes back. Sometimes those lps will lose their skin and revive later. That is just absolutely horrible. It is the reason I hate going to work...you never know what can happen in a few hours. I'm extremely sorry for your loss. Is there anything I can do to help?

Ow. Don't give up on the 'dead' corals. Some of the stonies retreat deep inside their structure for survival. See if any come out when the 'all clear' sounds.

Same thing happened to me before and I thought my frogspawn was nothing left but a skeleton and low and behold the thing came back fine after a month of babying it. The pretty blue torts all died but the brown digi all came back so yes you are correct the favorite things are always what seems to die:(

Oh, come on...you like blue torts more than brown digi?! All you have to do is make sure all the corals you really like are the ones you hate and vice versa. If you love the digi and hate the tort, obviously the digi is the one that will go. Natural conclusion of this hobby. Whenever someone comes over, be like, "Have you ever seen a brown digi that is soooo nice?" or "Sorry, not fraggin that brown digi...it's the centerpiece of my tank..."

i've had spikes up to 94degrees w/ no losses, let the water come back down very slowly, do not do big water changes just yet, as you dont want to shock everything. just keep the lights off for 24hours, and if you have coral food feed it heavily every 4-6hours until you bring the lights back on. once your temp has been brought back to normal throw the lights back on and you should be fine from there and then when the lights have been on for a few hours do your water change.

Were your corals sliming like crazy?

very sorry for you loss hopefully everything will swing back.

what kinda of lighting are you using to cause that kind of heat also whats the temp in your house. My house is around 80 when im not home with the sun out, and with 2 400w in a 120 mine wont go above 83.

I have three 400 watt MH and four 96 watt PC. House was at 80...
Any slug would be proud of the slime produced.
4 blue torts very questionable...
on the plus side... all my xenia died

im sory rayray for your losses,

i have a few xenia frags if you want to start back up

maybe get some clip on fans for a back up system

Sorry to hear about this disaster! There are so many risks to our reef tanks - sometimes I wonder if we are nuts to try to maintain this type of environment in our homes!

Some of the newer controllers such as the reefkeeper2 will actually turn off the halides if the water hits a user defined temp. I've been thinking about getting one - those controllers sound expensive until I read about something like this.

Sorry for not keeping up... I had to run out of state for a family thing for a few days... I see I missed a heck of an auction... and now the update...
I lost a bright green open brain, 2 torches, a frogspawn, a big hammer, green red and orange caps.
My tank has more than afew of the ultra rare albino acro's...
maybe I'll frag one to bring to the meeting... :(
The fish all survived. I figure they and the coral still in the tank have a temp range of 47 to 92 degrees...
