220 SPS Tank with 4x6100 Currently Looking to Change

Hi All,

I have a 220 gallon SPS reef tank (72x24x30H). When originally set up I used 4x6100 streams on a 7095 and a wavebox. We moved and redid the aquascaping in such a way that the wavebox can not longer be used (wave does not build up with rock on opposite side of tank on the glass). So we ended up just using the 4x6100s.

I love these pumps but with the new 6105s coming out, I like the more compact size and appearence of these so lookin at changing. My two options I am looking at are:

4x6105s on the 7095 multicontroller
(one in every corner of the tank blowing across the tank)

or

2x6105 and 4x6055 all on the 7095 multicontroller.
(6105s front corners blowing across the tank infront of the rockwork, 6055s in the back/corners to allow more flow into/around the corals near the back of the tank)


I was toying with the 6055 idea because I was thinking this would allow me to play with the flow a little more. I have two large rock mounds one on each side of the tank touching and gowing up to almost of the top of the tank. This makes placing my 6100s currently a little tricky to keep them from blowing tissue off the corals. part of this could be the very limited mobility I have with the 6100s when using the magnet mounts (6200s). From what I have read/heard the 6105s will have much more adjustment in the directions you can point it so this could correct the issue with getting nice flow along the back of my tank.

Any thoughts as to what you guys think?

If it were my 220g I would be going for 2 x 6205. They are the same body size as the 6105. They have a wider outlet. As far as I know that is the only visible difference between the two pumps.

Do you think the 6205s would be too much? Since they are in the front of the rockwork it may work out well since they are not directly pointed at the corals.

Would you do any other flow or get the two 6205s and see if there are deadspots?

Do you keep mainly SPS? Two 6205 would take up less space, 4 6105 has some advantages though, more overall flow and redundancy should a pump fail.

I would do 2x6205 and 2x6105 if my tank is full of SPS and lots of rock. That way i don't have to worry about dead spot...

I run 4x6100 streams currently and at times feel the flow is a little too much. My corals encrust tons (we are talking 6+months and inches in all directions) before any vertical growth. My frag tank (plumbed into the main display) has less flow and much faster growth.

Question though so I can compare.

How wide is the flow out of a 6105 at say 3' away from the stream? How wide is the 6205 at say 3' away?

How far will a 6055 reach across a 6' tank? I would be looking at them to do flow in the corners say 2' distance or so.

6105 has the flow pattern of 24" wide
6205 __________________ 30"
6055 __________________18" if i remember correctly

I help a friend setting up his 120g oceanic tank and he is using 2x6101 and planning to add 2x6205...

Steve is correct, a 6055's flow only reaches about 4ft. The flow fans out very quickly at 2-3' away it is about 2ft wide on a 6105 and 30" wide on a 6205. Both reach about 7ft.
