220 Tunze set up...please advise

Hello all,

I am currently in the midst of switching over to salt water after doing fresh for a few years, and in the process and thinking of buying a 220 gallon tank to replace my 125. The only thing is with the 220, the wife is being nice enough to allow me to buy it, but won't let me have a sump due to the bad stories she has heard. I know if set up proprely they work well...but i am not going to argue with her.

Anyway I was just wondering if i set up a FOWLR tank, and used 2 X 6100's and the 7095 wave simulator if this set up would work. (the flow rate should be 28x turnover per hour) I would probably add a tunze skimmer, not sure of the size yet (probably the biggest one I could).

I was going to have about 300 lbs of live rock in the center of the tank, so I was wondering where I should place the 6100's and the wave maker. I am not sure of the fish load yet, although I know i want an eel of some kind.

The 6100's are generally placed one in each corner aimed to the front center. The controller just needs to be somewhere it can't get wet. For a skimmer I recommend a 9010 and if possible a 3167 filter to remove particulate and possibly use some carbon/ phosphate remover if you need to.

well since i won't have any overflow boxes in the corners of the tank, I was thinking about setting up a 9015 skimmer in each corner of the aquarium. Do you think that would be overkill?

Also I may have trouble finding a 3167...i have an Ehiem canister 2028 I was thinking of using for carbon and a little mechanical filtration, making sure to clean it weekly.

Any thoughts?

The 3167 is in stock here, any delaer can get it to you. The main problem with the Eheim, while they are very reliable and a great unit for many uses, is that cleaning it once a week will get very old, very fast, the 3167 is much easier to maintain because it is right there and you just pull the cartridges out, it takes seconds.

One 9015 would be enough really, you might consider the 9020 since it is essentially 2 9015's but they cannot be seperated.

Thank you for the reply!!! I think then either a 9020 or 2 9010 skimmers is what i will end up using. For mechanical filtration, I also have an Emperor 400, that I could use. I am just thinking this would save me a little cash rather than having to buy the Tunze filter, and a pump for it...the emporeror's are very easy access and I can add carbon right to that.
