Hi
I am thinking of buying a secondhand tunze 230/3.
It is for my new 50g reef tank.
It is five years old and it looks like it's in a very good condition.
What do you guys say? Is it worth the money?
Is there anything in particular that I should look into before the perches?
Thanks

I would send the pump in for service, that would have one of the very first new generation pumps and I would change the drive unit and have the bore checked and honed if necessary.

is there any problem to use the unit as is?
when you use the term drive unit do you mean the impellor?
is it just too old skimmer should i try to find an Younger one?
can i give it service in a DIY way ?
thanks:rollface:

The very first model year of this pump had much tighter tolerances than they do now, they used a bit more power and were prone to locking up from calcium. I have the tools however to hone the motor to current specs, that is why it should come in, it will last longer if this is done and besides shipping the actual parts cost would be under $30 and I will waive the usual $20 labor fee.

Thanks roger
I think I would just go and find a newer model.
Can you be kind and specify for me the model and the launching year?
For example there is the 230 and the 230/2 and 230/3
And so on for this models 240 the 3130 and 3140.
Thanks

230 would be from 1986-1994, 230/2 from 1994-2000, 230/3 from 2000-2005. This really doesn't give a complete picture though as most of our products receive subtle upgrades every 6-12 months and the horizontal skimmers didn't change much but the Comline skimmers from 2000 and the ones from 2005 had substantial differences, yet both were called /2. On later ones a new venturi was used, a new silencer that was glued in place, a different body design with a different pump mount. /2 and /3 just designate major changes like new pumps or different sized bodies and this doesn't really present the whole spectrum of model changes.
