230 skimmer pump

Hi,

I pulled out this old 230 skimmer to give it a good run which I have never done. The pump probably has less than 6 months of use.

When I turn the pump on the impeller seems to get locked up. I can turn it smoothly with no problems with the power off. Any thoughts?

I wanted to take the impeller out, but I can't seem to figure out how to pull it out? The pump is the 235.02.

Thanks, Ed

That is a very old pump, they were made between 1988 and 2000. My best guess is the brake shoes are damaged of the brake ring is loose. You would need drive unit 3000.500, they are still available. Disassembly required some practice, you are welcome to send it in, I include a link if you want to try to do it yourself, pardon the Germgrish, at this time Tunze was just starting to export in any quantity and the manuals, etc were rather primitive.

Okay that makes sense..........it seems to be doing what a modern Tunze pump does when the prop runs the wrong way & rights itself, but instead this pump locks up.

I would be willing to send it in. The impeller looks fine. Would you charge to put in the new drive unit in also? Or do I need to send you the money for just the drive unit?

Yeah, I remeber the manual.........I don't see the link?

Hi Roger

Here's a pic---

Is that the brake that is broken? Can I just purchase that? Everything else seems to be fine.

Thanks, Ed

You can in theory, but I only stock the complete drive unit for a few reasons:

1) The drive units even though for a long obsolete pump, were updated with better plastics about 5 years ago, what you have is an original unit and the most common issue is the plastic tearing off the magnet, the white pieces on the magnet are now grey/black graphite reinforced plastic.

2) The amount of these pumps still in existence in the US is too small to justify stocking every small part.

3) Almost inevitably replacing one part only shows that another part was the original culprit, I would be relatively certain that at a minimum you need the brakes and brake ring.

If you prefer to get just the too small parts, if you order them on Tunze.com, I will order them in from Germany and we should have them in about 3 weeks. We have full 3000.500 drive units in stock and can ship within a day of getting the order.

Sounds good............I'll order the whole drive unit. $34.72 + shipping?

Where do I place the order? I can send paypal if that makes things easier?
