I am getting a custom tank built. 24"x24"x10"... its gonna be mostly a top down tank dominated by Acans, zoas/palys, and a little bit of sps. I have been a metal halide guy for my past 8 years of reef keeping, and im feeling like with this tank its time for an LED. (we have a 6 gallon tank with a par 38 over it as well). Now im curious, what LED is going to give me the best bang for my buck over a shallow tank like this? Should i put a couple PAR38s over it? or maybe a Kessil 350? Or an Orphek PR72? Or something like a SOL? I would appreciate any input you guys have cause aside from a little par38, i am an LED noobie! thanks in advance

You already know the par38 bulbs need to be high above the tank to get much spread but a shallow tank with LPS can get away from higher power lighting without many issues.

T5 gives acans the best coloring but its up to you. Bulb changes are the worst huh?

I'd probably try a evergrow/reefbreeders fixture or something similar before PAR38 LEDs if I was going led.
Or use a 150w halide for another year or two until led tech gets even better.

If you are interested in Kessil, wait a bit they are releasing the 360 which will be a dimmable version of the 350, this may also drop the price of the 150 and 350 models

Would one of these have a wide enough spread to work on a tank of this footprint?

Yes, one Kessil should be fine in theory. Especially because you can mount it higher with the tank being shallow.

I was using the AI Vega Color on my 24x24x12 and the spread was ok, some of the edging was not as bright. I had it about 6-8" above. Just make sure to do your research.
