240 Gallon question

I'm finally getting my 80 gallon sump tank built for my 240 gallon tank and while i wait for it to be built. I was looking at some pumps to create flow in the water and was looking at the Tunze stream kit t48, but would 4 pumps "Turbelle® stream 6105" be way to much flow or would just 2 do the job. I was thinking of putting one in each corner of the tank, 2 High and 2 Low type of configuration. I know that you can adjust the flow on the controller for them, but since i have never had them before I'm not sure the flow they put out.

Advise? suggestions?

Take a look at the new MP60 from Vortech, All you would need is one. And IMO they make better flow than Tunze pumps, More choices of settings. JMO

Those are real cool pumps, no wires inside the tank. Do they have a wave mode like the tunze?

WOW, those are some powerful pumps. Bill, I may have to disagree with you on this one. while one MP60 may handle the tank, I think it would be better off with at least two pumps to create a more random flow and give you the option of bouncing hte current off each other. I have seen teh Vortec's in action and they are pretty nice and for hte price, if I had a choice, I would most likely get a pair of the MP40Es for my 180.

all that said, I dont use either. I have a closed loop and a pair of Koralia's in my tank.

edit: yes they have a wave mode and are very customizeable.

You can do mp40es with 3/4 thick glass you can 3xmp40 or 1 maybe 2 mp60.
You can have Make big waves with these powerhead. Here the info on all it can do.


Operational Modes
Constant Speed Mode - Pump runs continuously at a constant speed which can be set by the user.

EcoSmart Nutrient Transport Mode (NTM) - A two phase program to promote maximum health and nutrient export, as well as increased growth for corals. Alternates between a resonant standing wave and a surge effect to stir up and export nutrients.

EcoSmart Tidal Swell Mode (TSM) - Creates a harmonic balance in your aquarium reminiscent of the changing flow conditions that would be found in nature. Flow varies from left to right, right to left, calm, and ends with a great surge.

Reef Crest Random Mode - Reef Crest Random Mode simulates the high-energy conditions of a natural reef crest environment.

Lagoonal Random Mode - Simulates the gentler reef zone found in a natural lagoon.

Short Pulse Mode - Allows for wave pulse timings between 0.3 and two seconds, enabling the creation of FAST alternating flow throughout the tank. Use this mode to create a resonant standing wave.

Long Pulse Mode - Allows for wave pulse timings of between 2 seconds and 60 seconds, enabling the creation of slow alternating flow throughout the tank.

Feed Mode - Slows down pump to allow user to feed aquarium. User can select the duration and speed for Feed Mode.

Night Mode - Automatically reduce speed and operates continuously at that speed for a period of time during the night. User can select the duration and speed for Night Mode.

Battery Backup Mode - When used with our battery backup accessory, the VorTech pump will switch to Battery Backup Mode in the event of a power outage and will operate at a user set speed. The LED’s on your EcoSmart driver will count down to indicate how much power is available within the battery.

Auto-Dim - LED’s are turned off and display knob dimmed significantly, but pump functions in its current mode. User can program how long after use before the driver enters Auto-Dim.

On/Off Switch - Tap the on/off switch to turn off and turn on a pump. Hold this button to turn off all pumps in a master/slave group. Tap any pump in the groups’ on/off switch and that pump will turn back on.

I deff like the vortex pumps more, now i know more about them. My main concern is the dead areas. I guess i could get 2 of the mp40 or maybe 4 of the mp10.. just wonder if the mp10s would create a enough current halfway across my 240, (36")

There's a Vidio of a guy with a 300gal tank and one MP60, That did more wave than 4 Tunze 6105. He said the MP60 was better flow in every corner of the tank compared to the Tunze's. But that's up to you to decide...

Looks like i would have to get the Mp40 or Mp60 only.. those are the only ones big enough to work threw 3/4" thick glass. I'm kinda leaning to getting 2 mp40's.

Mp10 won't work on that thick of a glass. Depends on your tank dim. If two mp40 will work. I have 3 mp40s in a 180. And going to add one more. After I fix it. So I would go with 4 mp40 or 2 mp60.

Ok and thats not to much flow? Are you pushing your current length ways (from right to left)? How long is your tank?

At 370 a piece, i want to make sure i don't overspend, at the same time i want to make sure i have enough flow.

+1 for Vortech, even running one MP40 I do not have any dead spots. I prefer two for my 140, but if your rock work is done right you should not have any issues.

I run one on each side panel at 75% And 2 on the back wall at 50%. My tank is 72x24x24
I think there a FTS on my 180 thread.

I run an mp40 and a mp60 in my 300 and love them!! There's no chance of dead spots at all!!
between the different modes you can run these things there's not to many spots in the tank they can't stir up!!

Great this was the information i was looking for. I think that im going to go with 2 mp40w es. If they tend to be a bit low on the flow then i can just add 2 more. Thanks for everyones advise on this.

OK.. one last question. Anybody running these vortex powerheads, have you had any issues with your creatures being killed? Looks like there is not much to stop them, but mabey its has a cover or something that im not seeing.

i just don't shut mine off. I turn them right down just never off.
Usually its when they get turned off a blenny or goby will check them out and then they get turned on creating a mess!!

They do have a foam like piece that could stop a weak swimmer from being sucked all the way in but i dont use mine.

agree only time mine gets turned off is when i clean them. when they are on to much flow for any fish to swim in the powerhead. And i never had a fish or seahorse get stuck on intake sides of the powerhead.

Ditto, foam cover for weak swimmers like small gobies, but I do not use them. My lawnmower blenny sits on top of it with not issues and it is on full blast.
