240 Inwall Construction (Image Intense)

Thanks, Marc. I was finally able to take a few shots today and stitch them together to create the following image. There's quite a bit more shade these days as the corals toward the top have expanded quite a bit. I did do some thinning of the right side by removing several corals which created a nice cave area. The fish seem to appreciate this added swimming area too. Also, note how the Heniochus was caught in the act of dining on some escargot. He single-handedly and constantly keeps the snail population dwindling. I have to right an upturned snail as soon as I see it to save their life from the inevitable attach. On the flip-side, he's a beautiful fish. ;) Sorry for the relatively dark photo but it was the only way I could get a decent shot without over-exposed hot spots. Here she is as of today...

WOW!!!! It is sooo full. Simply amazing. One day soon I need to visit your tank before you break it down for the inevitable upgrade. :eek2:

Thanks for taking the time to give us an image.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Unfortunately, there probably won't be any upgrade anytime soon. If anything, it would be just the opposite. The electrical costs have increased so much here in California that going larger isn't a feasible option. Although, Pacific Gas and Electric just provided me with an inconsequential $500 return from having had over-charged us previously (over the already inflated prices). This was due to them having been caught continuing to charge the same or raised rates even though they were purchasing the electricity for a reduced price. Then their response to their customers is that they simply made a mistake. Uh huh. I know many people freely label big companies as evil but this one truly justifies the title. Now we have the new "smart" meters that are now under close scrutiny with many claims of inaccuracies. I'll give you one guess whose favor these are benefiting. But hey, I'm not bitter. ;) Anyway... Marc, any time you'd like to visit the tank, you are welcome.

Oh... I was reminded with an inquiry of the Sebae anemone that it is no longer with us. :( I'd had this anemone for about 10-years as it was transferred to the current tank from my old 65-gallon. Basically, after having been in the same location in this tank for years, it decided to move up into the rocks and corals and then slowly shrunk until it was dead and gone. Not sure why as it always appeared happy and healthy. I do have a small carpet anemone that's moved to the center "valley" so the clowns still have a host.

Joe, the coral above the Heniochus is that the Acropora Hoeksemai, and to the left is that the Cali or Bennett Tort? I think I have frags of both, Mine seem to look and have similar growth pattern...

Simply amazing. I don't know what I like better, the excellent results your getting in your tank or the high quality DIY work you've done. The DIY acrylic work looks cnc quality. I know at one point you said you were using standard tools such as a router. I don't know how you're getting such excellent quality using a router. Thanks for documenting this so thoroughly, it would be a shame to do all that you've done and not share it with everyone.

Joe, the coral above the Heniochus is that the Acropora Hoeksemai,
That's a blue/green with baby blue tip stag like Acropora. No name, just one I picked up from the wholesalers years ago. I do have the Hoeksemai but it behind the Miami Orchid (big brown with blue tip Acropora at the center).
and to the left is that the Cali or Bennett Tort? I think I have frags of both, Mine seem to look and have similar growth pattern...
Yep, that's a Tortuosa Acropora and I think it's the Cali but don't quote me. I've heard it called both but I'm not up on them well enough to have a definitive name... nor do I care to be. ;)
Joseph what is your biggest ele consumer on your tank?
Lights, without a doubt. 2000-watts as it is now with running the MH's and one bank of VHO. Next is probably my skimmer pump (Iwaki 100) at 300-watts, 24/7. I've considered going to a Bubble King or the like and just bite the bullet in a one-time expense. This would shift money away from PG&E, which would provide great satisfaction. :) But, at the same time, I am very pleased with my skimmer as it is with how well it keeps up with waste demand.

ReefKeeperRob,
Thanks for the kind words and you are welcome.

I checked the Iwaki site but there isn't much info there. Do you know of a retailer or where further info can be had? My main concern would be that a 12 or 24 volt unit would have the same pressure rating as this is crucial to a dual Beckett driven skimmer. Thanks.

Man do I ever smell the reason for a new road trip! :D Let's see what I can work out for 2010.

I'm glad you got a tiny refund back, which I know is a drop in the bucket for electricity rates in your area.

You posted quite a bit of PAR information back when it was possible to squeeze a PAR sensor in your tank. At this point I think it would be more than problematic to change the lighting as it would likely nuke the upper level corals that have creating such a stony wall at the surface. I've been running Lumenbrights for over 1.5 years and the electricity consumption went down while the PAR went up substantially. I run each bulb 6 hours a day.

Does the tier system in your state help, running the lighting from 6pm to 1am instead of a normal day time schedule? I know some areas have cheaper rates as soon as the clock strikes 18:00 each evening.

Such a shame - 10 years in your care is still a great accomplishment.

You will need to call Iwaki Walchem 508-4291440 thay can tell you about the dc pump. The pumps come Japan.

Joe your tank has been my true inspiration since the first day i layed eyes on it in pictures and in person. You guys have no idea how beautiful this tank looks in person. One one WooooooooooooW!!!!! Your great Joe.....

Thanks guys for the kind words and information. I'll try and get a full tank shot as soon as possible but it's not much different than the last.
