240g and Fishroom build

No worries. Any updates?

Im sorry but no updates. The tank is going into day 6 of the cycle with very little ammonia showing. Im still holding steady at .25ppm. I added 3 more shrimp giving it a total of 6. Three in the sump and three in the DT. Im hoping ill show some nitrite within a week or so.
I still need to finish the stand but havent had time to do anything. I did build a door for the canopy but am not happy with the results so im starting over on it.
Im also planning the auto top off and not sure how I want to run it. im thinking a gravity fed system from my freshwater storage with a float valve in the tank. However im worried about a snail or something keeping the float down resulting in a flood. So I think ill just use my old setup from my 65 and run it.
Still need to build the automatic water change, vent the canopy, finish stand, buy 2 mp40's, get a 3rd led light,

Great build so far! Very similar to my 240 tank. What is the size of ur return pump u have? It's massive!

Thank you. My return pump is a ReeFlo Barracuda/Hammerhead Hybrid 6000⁄4590GPH. Its moving some serious water, I have it dialed back so my overflows and keep up. I wanted a pump big enough to handle the return and the manifold. I didnt want several pumps running, Just one big enough to handle it all.

No worries. I understand the lack of time thing. I usually put one or two shrimp in the sand bed which I have been told helps break it down faster but I have no proof of that as I have never tried it it the water column before. I use a double float switch for my ATO with a pvc end cap to cover the switchs from snails. It has been running this way for 5 yrs now.

That's some incredible water movement! What size pipes (2") are your returns going back to your sump? How much flow did you have to dial it back to? My return is about 1500 gph. Not sure how I could increase the flow to even 2000 or more gph. Thanks for your input.

The durso and pipes are 1 1/4. They can handle the pump wide open however I get the flushing sound down the pipes and makes my water level in my sump change as i get a surge of water.

How are the Reeflo pumps doing? I was considering using them for when I start my build.
I did look around and read a lot of reviews. Its seems that a lot of people have had issues with the seal. I did look at other pumps but with my sump in my basement with that much headloss I needed a pump strong enough to handle that, power consumption was also a consideration. However it appears that my seal is fine but I have been keeping a close eye on it. I think i will go ahead and order a new seal just to have on hand.

Thank you, ill move mine to the sand. Can you post a picture of your ato setup?

Well, all my parameters are the same but woke up with a a faint layer of diatoms. Well looks like it anyways on the sand and few rocks.

Very normal. They come and go in the beginning for awhile. I will see about posting a ATO pic for you if I can figure it out. :lolspin:

congrats! Now let the fun begin:bounce1:

Absolutely!!!!

I do have a question and have been trying to work this out in my head for a while and still havent come up with any solid plans.

Due to me being me and having a crazy schedule and well just being down right lazy at times I want an automated water change. To accomplish this I will be using my profilux controller. No here is my issues and concerns.

my DT is upstairs and I planned on letting my old water run from my DT by having a schedule 80 half inch pipe run down into my DT about 5 inches or so. This pipe would go up over the back and down into the fish/sumproom and into my drain. To accomplish the water movement from the DT to the drain I was going to use a self primer utility pump. Now Im thinking that once the pump starts it will create a siphon and would not stop until air gets sucked in. And in all it wouldnt be the end of the world as long as I could figure out how far down my pipe would need to go to achieve a 20% water change. And in all actuality the pump could start and shut off to just get the siphon going and then let the siphon get rid of the water.

Now when I shut my return off, roughly 20 gallons of water will drain into my sump. So in theory I could check my current DT water level, shut the return off and mark where the water stops below the overflows, then measure those two distances and triple it. Then that is where my exit pipe should end in my DT giving me around 40 gallons of water change?

So to sum it up.
I hit the water change button on my Profilux
My self priming utility pump cuts on draining around 40 gallons of water.
Water in the last baffle will start to drop and tripping a sensor to shut the return off and the skimmer.

Now I need to get a big enough pump to move water from my storage up and over the back of the DT.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Hey guys and gals. I have been MIA but have not stopped on the tank. Im doing what I can when money coves available. I have however built my water storage/mixing station stand. I have built a reactor manifold. More of my sand arrived so I have my deep sandbed now. Im pretty happy with the aquascape. I just purchased an mp40 and about to purchase another one in a few weeks. Im still in need of another AI Sol blue light for the right side of the tank.

Tank stock as of right now in DT
My 2 original true percs and an anemone
yellow mimic tang
blue green chromis (had 5 but the tank gods claimed 4)
yellow wrasse
4 sps (acro, birdsnest, 2 montis

In the refuge
1 clown
1 damsel

Now the update pictures

here is my reactor manifold. Its working great. Im so glad i decided to go this route.

Here is my mixing station, its a work in progress.

Here is one of the doors close up. Not to bad for my first door. They all turned out pretty good but need to rebuild 2 of the canopy doors.

The center hole will be shelves. The top shelf will house the "command station".

All the doors on except the center door. I want to make that door with tinted glass to expose the lights behind it.

In the next few weeks im hoping to have my other Mp40 and the profilux module to control them. I also hope to purchase my ghl doser unit for it also. As of right now im dosing manually and its a pain. Ill also be purchasing 5 more fish in a few weeks. im going to get 5 juvenile yellow tangs. They will be going into QT for 4 weeks before going into the DT. I still need to finish trimming out the stand and throw some stain on it. I am also in the market for a used external pump to pump new SW into the tank for the Auto water change.

Tomorrow I'll finish up the build and stain it. I still need to build the center door. I'm just not sure how I'm going to do it yet. The top of the door will have tinted glass.
