250 Gallon Starphire SPS tank

Ben, If you turn on the stirrer (on low) and use a long stick to poke around in the bottom of the reactor, the magnet should move back into position as the stirrer will pull it there automatically. This has happened to me before if I put too much kalk in the reactor or had the stirrer speed set too high. (only needs to be set at like 1/2 full speed)

Tried that many a time. The bigger reactor (8 inches) makes it much more difficult.

I know what you mean by turning it up too high, half works good for me to.

No worries I will get it going w/o problems, I will just not take short-cuts anymore.

Turned on the T5s for a while to assess any damage (left halides off til tomorrow). I must be really lucky, because things are looking good!

The only thing that looks affected are 2 SPS that changed color, as long as they continue to be healthy it will actually be a good thing becasue I like the new color better!

My green slimer lost about 25% of its polyps, but I am sure it will bounce back quickly. I had a crab that was eating it before, and it came back within weeks.

I will try to post some more pics today, then next week I will try and post some pics of the changed colors.

More pics.

Clam with blue zoos approaching. Funny how these zoos did nothing for a year and are now taking off.

Some more coral warfare in the works.

Notice in the back of the pic there is a piece of monti that is on my green slimer?

Wonder how it got there?

I wondered to when I see pieces of that coral all over my tank.

My stupid Regal tang will rip a piece off and carry it around the tank when nobody is watching, then deposit it where he sees fit. I have a few pieces of this coral growing all over.

An aquascaping fish, who would have thunk it?

Another clam with LPS approaching.

Great pics so far! Are those Melev's "mean greens" beneath the clam?

Do a search on it, but here are some of the main reasons:

-Way less detritus = cleaner water, better color, less algae
-more potential for flow w/o sandstorm
-less$, don't have to buy sand or all the needed critters
-more room in display tank
-if loss of power tank will last longer due to less oxyegn requirement for tank (sand will use up O2 like crazy)
-had it before and it was a PITA
-I think you get the idea!

ahhhh... I'm not trying to knock it
was just curious

love the tank... it looks like that spot in the house was made for the tank :eek1:

No worries, just off the top of my head.

The spot WAS made for the tank.;) Re-inforced floor and all.

Nice update and sorry to hear of your problems. What made the tank all white and the PH spike?

I'm sure you are already keeping a close eye on things after what happened but keep an even closer eye because adding that much vinegar could cause some problems of its own. Vinegar is a carbon source for bacteria and adding it is pretty much the same thing as dosing vodka. If too much is added, a bacteria bloom will shortly follow. If the bloom is large enough, it can actually suffocate some of the livestock by sucking up all the 02. Another thing to worry about is that the bacteria will suck up all the nutrients in the tank while it is blooming and then suddenly release them en masse when it dies off. But it looks like you probably have pretty low nutrients so that shouldn't be a concern. I would just make sure to run your skimmer extra wet and maybe clean it every day for the next few days to be sure it is working at maximum efficiency to remove the bacteria if there is a bloom. The bacteria bloom may be the reason your tank got cloudy after adding the vinegar. But I agree, under your circumstances the top priority was getting that PH back down and FAST.

Seem to be having some sort of bloom for the last two days. Tank is cloudy, not real bad , but definitely cloiudy. Maybe it is a bacteria bloom?

I just added about 1 lb of carbon and turned up the skimmer even more.

Ph is at 8.2 alk 13 ca 470ish, levels slowly coming down, but I think all the calcium consuming critters are likely recovering for at least a few days before they resume growing.

Any other ideas to get things to clear up. Already running ozone at 100%.

Let me know if you wanna swap ozone units soon; my higher capacity unit may help things out.
