i currently have 2 150 watt halides,im thinking about upgrading to 250 watt halides, would this be enough to have what ever i wanted? such as some of the blue acros and ect?

thx

your 150's should be plenty, but my last system, a 72g tank had de 250's and I had clams sps lps zoo's and they all did well.

keep them about 6-10 inches off of the water. heat may be an issue for you.

Travis L. Stevens, positive? my lfs said i wouldnt be able to have any blue acros or harder sps because i dont have enough light,i dont want to have to put every coral i get in the upper half of the tank.2 150s still enough? thank you much

What does "blue" have to do with it? I've seen them kept under much less lighting in far deeper tanks. I'm positive what you have will be fine.

i was under the impression that blue acros were harder to keep,in terms of health and color.exampl,i was told that if i bought this specific type (dont remember off hand, blue acro) that since i didnt have enough light,it would turn silverish(lose its deep blue color). if this isnt true,i will probably be so happy i could poop.:P just kiddin.i would love to be able to get a oregon blue tort frag, but havent because i was told it problably wouldnt have enough light.

Yeah, 150's will be fine. I have 2 de phoenix 14k 250's in pendants on my 75 and I have to raise them at least a foot above the water for my corals like frogspawn, mushrooms, zoanthids, monti digi's, hydnophora, and even some acropora.

Well, that's different! You can keep and have what you want grow under your current lighting, but there is no garuntee that there isn't a little color change. Color change is more dependent on nutrients in the tank, stress, Color Temperature of bulbs, UV light present, etc. When I'm talking about your lighting, I'm talking about the life and death of the coral. FWIW, I know a few people that run 36" deep tanks filled with Acros that are powered by 6ft VHOs. Some of their acros are blue. Once again, I don't think what you have is a problem at all. If you want color, then I would focus what you have to the 20,000ºK spectrum with some decent actinic supplementation. The colors should be vivid and pop out as long as you don't have too much nutrients.

I'd have to totally agree with Travis on this one. I actually downgraded from dual 400w MH's to dual 175's this winter. I mainly did it b/c I fight heat all summer long. My corals honestly look better than ever. The color has been the same or better on every single one. Growth has been the same or better than with the 400's. Plus my Power bill is about $40 less on average :D and that makes me happy!! :D.

I'd say you are fine with the 150's. I run 14k bulbs with two VHO actinics for supplement.

It's water quality that's going to have alot to do with your success. If that's out of whack, all the light in the world isn't going to help ya :D!

wow! i am so very happy right now,i think you guys just saved me from spending 600 bucks on some 250 watt halides.im kinda angry about the fact that when i looked for corals to buy,i pretty much avoided all of the blue ones(actually i already went against his opinion getting an acro millepora which was blue/didnt lose any color from his tank with 400 watt halides)

one more thing, just a note.every coral i have gotten so far(5 frags, acro millepora blue and green, montipora(unknown) and 2 more unknowns) acclimate to the tank very well, polyps out within minutes,no color change really at all(with the exeption of the lfs having stronger lighting) i am only running an aqua c remora skimmer(kinda ashamed to admit) but i dont have much load at the moment, all fish are small(ish) and frags are still that, frags.
