250 watt SE MH lamps compared

Coralvue changed their whole product line after their bulbs were tested. So the reeflux line was not tested.

I am probably not going to test them anytime soon. I am trying to get my new tank up and running. So it will be a while till I have the time to test new bulbs.

Do you have any thoughts on how they may perform from seeing them(assuming you have seen them in person)? I know it's kind of a stab in the dark, but I'm just curious. Thanks

They should perform well. I've seen the 10K ones, they look pretty nice. They provide a pretty goof balance of growth and color. I'd recommend to look at them first if you can, they look a little different from most of the other 10K bulbs.

JB, have you tried or do you have any info on the Galaxy 250w electronic ballast that Sunlight supply has? I was just curious...

Thanks, Darin

Joe,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your fortitude all these years. This was begun in 2003 and it is now 2007. I applaud.

I have been doing a lot of readings recently on SPS care and want to begin to aquire some specimens. My question is what lighting would you reccommed to keep various acorapora, millepora etc. I have a 26G tank with 130w power compacts as of now but what lighting with what bulb and what ballast is best? Ive heard a minimum of 250w for sps care. I liked the coralvue 10k's.

A 250 Watt MH on a 26 gallon will get that water just about boiling hot.

Tag along first before I can come up with any pic as for comparison purpose. This a very interesting to read and extremely helpful thread, though it needs more pics to please the eyes while reading. All the lights are on now, so have to wait 'till tomorrow. I'm going to take pics of :
_250 watt XM 15K only
_250 watt Iwasaki 10k only
_XM 15K + Iwasaki 10k
_then plus 220 watt actinic
Bulbs and new version icecap ballast are 4 days old
I know, can't say much about it without a pic, I'll see you all tomorrow.

Here come the pics for your ref. Light are reflecting under the white paint reflector, so light spreading is not a factor to consider here.
The Iwasaki is not that yellow as I thought it would be, with the actinic supplement it looks nice though, plus I'll have the grow. Definitely I'll go with it and I believe it'll even look much better under DIY Luminar . The XM 15K makes the bottom of the tank look dull which I personally don't like it.
Actinic only:

Iwasaki only:

Can anyone list the most newest 25ow SE bulbs on the market today? Or even if anyone has heard of any new bulbs coming.

Iwasaki has a new 14k bulb coming out, actually I think it is already out. You can almost guarantee it's going to be a winner once someone tests it.............

I'm using the 250w Coralvue Reeflux 12K without actinic supplement and it's perfect, in the big Luminarc reflectors. I got tired of replacing the blue bulbs, and it's very pretty and my tank has not suffered at all. I have sps, clams and lps. I run them about 10 1/2 hours a day.

Any info on the blueline 10k 250 watt bulbs?I realy like the bluish tint these bulbs have for a 10k.I hope I didnt make a poor choice in getting these bulbs.

The blueline Super White 10k's did pretty well. I'm actually thinking of switching to them from Reeflux 10k's. The blueline Super white 10k's have more par on a coral vue ballast than the reeflux's.

I too am interested in the sps bulbs. On Sanjays site the cct is 19000 but whe I called marine depot thet said they were white. wouldnt 19000 be a blue bulb?

I'm not planning on adding a reflector. The test will still be measuring the bare lamp. The main difference being, I would take the measurement from the top of the lamp not the bottom.

I have been skimming through this thread and excuse me if someone has already recommended this-

What about mounting a reflector on the bottom so its facing up?

from waaay back:

250 watt 6500 K. They produce almost as much light as the 400 and are cheeper to operate. The 65K's are the closest to natural sun light and they last up to 2 yrs woth less than 10% reduction in

feel free to correct all the wrong assumptions in my statement: my 75g tank (w 55g sump) that will be primarily 4 nems, 3 e quadricolor and 1 s. helianthus, zoos, various euphylia, and one day a clam or two, will be very well served with 2x250w 6500 mh bulbs. in order to mitigate the horrible walmart yellow pall (my daughter is learning about honesty in school, so i'm setting the example...my wife hopes next week's topic is 'tact') i need to buffer or counteract with actinic bulbs of some kind. this will give me a great combination of growth and 'curb appeal.'

next question is fill in the blank:
my tank is in my office, so for the MH ballasts i should get _______.

extra credit, pick one:
a) the most cost efficient fixture available that would do what you want is the ______ and you can order it from _______.
b) to build what you want into a hood, you should order the following parts:
____
____
____

my wife is so happy you guys are helping me avoid the light issue from the start!!!

right now, all the occupants are in a 44g corner with a 175w 20k. we love the color from months 2-6, and then we forget it was blue. growth is good, but my bulb is really old right now, and i'm hoping not to replace it...so we need to speed up the new system!

thanks all,

tim
