250g Zoanthid Dominated Canadian Reef System

your setup is excellent... love the mangrove growout... amazing zoa garden

James404 Amazing tank, thanks for sharing!

owentl Great looking tank! I love the all the zoas

Thanks for the comments!

Chromey316 What are your mangroves planted in?

Mixture of the sand from a couple of tanks including everything from sugar to course aragonite, there's even some dead coral skeleton and shells. All in all there is about 9" in a 4'L X 22"W tank, a few to many lbs to count.

My friend told me, being a zoa fan, I had to see your tank.... And it is awesome!!! Love the set up!

I'm really interested to see how this tank will look about a year from now. Do you have fast growth on the zoas? It would be amazing to not see any of the rock beneath them.

Do you find the mangrove system is actively filtering. I'd love to do something similar, but from what I've read it looks like one would need a very large amount of plants to make a small dent in water quality. They sure do look nice though.

I'm quite interested to see my 1 year photos as well, have a few more high end palys on the way (CARs, Sunny D's, Captain America Palys...) so it should be interesting. In addition to that I'm absolutely flabbergasted at the shortness of our cycle, I thought we would at least get a pest algae bloom but so far everything has been smooth sailing.

Growth really varies on the morph but some things really seem to have enjoyed the swap.

I do agree with you jared, the mangroves do require numbers to actively filter but I'm a big believer in the mangrove "system" over the pods themselves. A great deal of surface area is provided by the 400+ lbs of livesand and the root systems make for perfect pistol shrimp/ goby burrows.

Even if it doesn't filter it still looks wicked, I will have to test the intake and outtake water sources one day for nitrates to check.

More recent shots of both:

New name for my square back: Dr. Albert Hofmann :lol2:

I get the feeling this fish thinks its a clown, its always hanging around my Onxy female. Next on the addition list will be a healthy little female for him.

New Zoa colony, WOW this thing is stunning is person! Reminds me of the space paly inside but lacks the green frillies.

And a few of the camera hog Flash G:

Newest addition (Cough Impulse Buy Cough) is a 1.5" Magestic angelfish which is just starting to get its adult colors. Hes gone into hiding now but is eating, will try and snap a photo of him when he gets some confidence to come out front.

gorgeous photos!!, gorgeous tank!!
...although it does look like your house may be on fire in the background!

Beautiful tank, I love the design and setup. I hope those zoas spread quickly!

What type of lighting to do you use for your mangroves?

Thanks guys, the back ground fire is a 400W HPS grow lamp with reflector from a local shop. The guy didn't believe my "Red Mangrove" story so I got sent home with some grow books .

Guess if I ever fail at reefing I have something lucrative to fall back on :hmm2:.
