I need to replace my bulbs, I wonder what people use on here using and how do you like it, I'm running 250w DE I don't care about the growth I want my tank to look good and the coral color to pop out. I'm buy bulbs soon any suggestion?

My fav bulbs right now are the EVC 20K bulbs in DE. Color is spectacular. Another outstanding choice is the Ushio / AB 20K's

i have both phoenix 14k and Ushio 20k on icecap ebalast on the same tank... they look the same to me! FWIW

Still cannot figure your claim out. I have ushio / AB 20K's & also phoenix 14K's on an e-ballast. They look absolutely nothing alike color wise. The phoenix looks like diluted windex and the ushio is white with a violet hue.

what about the EVC 20K bulbs? I like some blue color to it. I been hear a lot of good stuff about he EVC 20k it's a helio bulbs

The EVC 20k has wonderful color on a M80m ballast. Think Phoenix 14k without the washout, and more purple hues. Makes the color pop for sure. I don't think there that great for growth though. But it is a 20k bulb right.

People always say bulbs like the EVC 20K are not that great for growth *LOL* I used AB 20K's with less measured par for awhile now and have had outstanding growth & color out of all my SPS types "70+ now" Growth also depends heavily on a multitude of factors besides just lighting. Once you get it all balanced, you can run a higher K lower par bulb with outstanding results.

Well the 20K is very cool looking with a ton of actinic. Really makes things pop. I like it personally and it is my choice. I have not tried the EVC 14K.

I was stating that the growth that I got from that bulb was not the greatest. I probably got three times the growth with the phoenix. Your right, a multitude of variables exists in all are tanks, and can have a huge impact on growth. Just my experience with this bulb:)

Three times the growth? Pretty impressive number :) I did not experience anything like that when I went away from phoenix bulbs to an even lower PAR 20K than the EVC, but there was a difference, but more in the few percent range. Colors however improved drastically for me when using a higher K bulb, and not just talking about a color change from the bulb color.

I did get better colors with the 20k evc, but a few of my corals quit growing all together or slowed down quite a bit. I love the color of that bulb. My favorite so far. It just didn't work well for me when it came to growth. Maybe if I had dropped the light down alot closer to the tank it might have made a little difference. I try to keep the light high enough that the household air conditioner in the house is enough to cool the tank. A chiller is in my future some time. Right now it's about 16" off the surface. Not to hijack the thread just trying to give info:)

I use an AB 20k over my 40g. It's an LPS tank so I can't say much about growth. The only way I could even see the par being down from my Phoenix is that my Bubble tip that's in there climbed to the top of the tank shortly after going to the 20K and has stayed there. I would guess it needed more light.

Wow that is pretty high but understandable with a 30G. The actual bulbs are around 8" off the surface of the water in my 90G. What temp do you keep your home at..? Any fans..? I had a 150w over my 18G long ago, never had any temp issues. I did keep my house around 72 then. It also had a behind the tank sump which probably aided in cooling.
