250w HQI MH no glass?

I changed out my lighting for my 75 from T5's to 250W MH HQI, The MH does not have a glass covers over it.
my question is. would you think it is safe to run the MH with out the glass cover on it or is it just to keep water from splashing up and hitting the bulb.
In the pass I have ran MH single ends with out any glass and everything was fine. Where my sunpod HQI has glass on it.
I am not sure of the difference here, or if it is just manufacturer preference?

you MUST have the sheild with de bulbs. no UV protection without it.
it'll fry your tank and YOU.
