29 gallon biuld Thread

Finally getting close to starting up the 29 gallon I've had sitting in the corner of my living room. Within three or four weeks I hope to be starting the cycle with rock and the fish from my 5 gallon nano tank I already have. Heres a list of specs/ ideas for the tank:

Fish list:
1X six-line wrasse
2X occelaris clowns
1X flame angel
2x orchid dottybacks
1X yellow watchman goby

Corals:
GSP as space fillers
Mushrooms as space fillers
Hammer coral ( I like the crème with white or green)
Frogspawn coral
LOTS of SPS- open for suggestion on specific ones(liking green slimmer and birdsnest corals)

Equipment:
350 w MH/T5/LED moonlight combo light(hung from ceiling)\
2X hydor koralia 420 powerheads(set in wavemaker from controller)
Aqueon pro 150W heater
Aqueon model 1 sump
mag drive 5 return pump
coralife super skimmer 65
refugium(in sump)
eshopps pf-800 overflow
Reef Keeper Elite controller

While the equipment sounds fine, I don't think the Flame Angle will fly in that tank. What do you have for testing?

as far as angel, would a gramma be better, have any suggestions otherwise?


have hanna checkers for PH and phosphate, red sea tests for AK, CA, MAG

The Flame Angle is my favorite saltwater fish, but they generally need a 70+ and good rock work to swim and hide in.

Refractometer?

Also, you may want to consider going with 2 75w heaters instead of the one 150w. This way, your one heater won't cook your tank if it fails in the ON position.

im using the controller for the heater as well so it shuts off if it gets above a set temp

no refractometer but I use two different hydrometers for more accuracy

Make sure that heater fits in the sumps water level. My 100w eheim barely fits in my sump. I also advise getting 2 smaller heaters. I regret not doing so.

overflow is eshopps pf-800 so im good on overflow size I think, 800 GPH overflow and 500 GPH pump

Everything looks good! Do more research on the Flame Angel though, it might need a bigger tank.

you might consider a pistol shrimp for that pistol goby (unless the clicking noise will drive you nuts). It's really neat to see them work together

Very similar to the setup I had before upgrading to my 40B.

Royal Gramma is a better choice in that size tank. I still have the one I initially put in my tank, always out and looks great. One of my favorite fish. I've read that sixlines can get aggressive.

I had put in a sixline as one of my first fish and have regretted it ever since and this is in a 150 DT. I can only imagine how aggressive it will be in a 29.

1)yes id like a pistol goby but I have no idea which one would go well with that goby. any suggestions?

2) yeah gramma would be cool then instead of the angel

3) I have heard sixlines can get aggressive as well but I have a friend who has had one in a 32 gallon for over a year with no problems. did he just get lucky and have a docile one or is it okay in similarly sized tanks I don't know lol, but its my favorite fish so I think ill take the risk.

Save yourself the time. Get a refractomater. Easier to read and always more accurate.

Do search on sixlines. You will find 1 person out of 100 that had a docile one.

Okay so I've got a refractometer from my local fish store and I did a water change yesterday measuring with my refractometer the hydrometer and the hydrometer said the SG was 1.026 but the refractometer said it was 1.024 so I went with that but I don't know if that's right. It was pretty hard to calibrate using the little screwdriver and the solution.

2 I saw the new nano division tank wars and I saw that Haden had a long nose hawkfish in a 30 gallon so is this an okay candidate for the tank, also any husbandry tips for that species would be greatly appreciated.
3) just finished plumbing and leak test and everything was a go, but I'm traveling cross country next week so I'm going to wait until I get back to start the cycle but it's finally all coming together after over a year of planning.

Well no one has responded but anyways I filled the tank yesterday added salt and am starting the cycle now. Going to wait 3 weeks untill I add my clean up crew then first fish. Here's a picture if it so far:
