I have a 29 gallon plenty of LR and LS and PS its been runing for about 4 months all the rock was takin out of a previos tank so i had no cycle..Anyways i had a fluval 404 with fliter pads in there and carbon. i no that this will produce nitrates if not clean regulary which it has. Now will my water be dirtier without the fluval/ or will i need to do more often more water changes becasue no filter pads to catch detruis. Im thinking just to take it off! what would u do

I don't know if i'm right or not, but i use a fluval on my set up. The carbon helps clean the water and make it crystal clear. It also helps increase the flow aswell as increasing water volume. I say keep it as long as you are cleaning it regularly.

I would take it off and see if your system is biologically balanced without it... what is your bio load anyway? If it's not that big you could probably run the tank without it but remember not to forget water changes :P What size PS do you have ... any other filtration like a DSB? Chaetomorpha? Kinda need more info to make a better judgement call :D
