29g AGA build/journal

I wouldn't ID that as Bryopsis, personally, but without a specific macro shot focused directly on the algae it's going to be hard to call.

Every time I've seen Bryopsis, it's pretty easy to ID, but this is all in person rather than photos. It stands out from the typical sawtooth/sawblade Algae in the sense that the plant itself is soft and fine, more "hair-like" than the stiff and firm sawtooth plant. Here is a close-up picture of how it might look upon very close inspection

Yours doesn't look to be as green as Bry., either. But perhaps I'm just being too optimistic, and wishing for the best. With a better photo, you could get a more definitive answer.

Well i hope you're right Crab. I will get a macro pic of it uploaded this weekend. It does look very similar to the pics in this thread.

Algae bloom cleared up after I started running GFO and GAC, the yellow watchman goby is loving life, and added the first coral to the display; all is good:thumbsup: Also changed the refugium bulb from a compact flourescent to a 4W LED. I think I spend more time watching the refugium than I do the display. Here are a few pics...

Nice shots - I always tell myself that I'll pull out my tripod and set up for some macros of my lesser inverts.. but I can never be bothered to stop watching my fish to actually do it >_<

One day, though!

You better watch how you talk about my inverts :hammer: haha! Unfortunately there's not much else to photograph yet...

Finding new critters and trying to ID them is one of my favorite things about this hobby though.

Thanks for the new ideas I now have very inspiration...

I'm glad you can take something from my build. Good luck with yours!

I would love to see some marine bettas in there!

Well it would definitely be a marine betta as I'm only working with 29g. It is my first choice too but I'm starting to think it's probably not the best idea. Here are the reasons;

-tank is only 29g so I would probably need to upgrade and/or move the fish somewhere else eventually.

-there is minimal rockwork in the tank and marine bettas love to hide.

-my 2 beautiful little girls (read "glass tappers") would pester it endlessly.

-probably would have to be the only fish in the tank, besides the YWG.

Don't get me wrong, if the right fish presents itself I may have to give in and go for it.

Here is a great article on Comets (marine bettas). The comet he talks about surviving 3 months in a neglected tank was originally my brother's. It now lives at the Omaha Zoo and is getting up there around 15-20yrs old :eek2:

Here is an updated FTS with 2 new donor corals from a friend; Seriatopora hystrix (Birdsnest) and Caulastrea furcata (Candy Cane Coral). I was acclimating them during this picture but have since moved them onto the rockwork. Going to watch them closely to see how they do. My old tank was all softies so this is actually my first go at stony corals. :fun5:

Nice bird, it's got long branches from the one's I've seen.

Unfortunately the birdsnest isn't doing so hot. To my defense, it wasn't doing very well in the tank it came from either. I got it right after it had fallen into a frogspawn colony. I trimmed back some areas with tissue loss so that's probably why it looks like it has long branches. Currently it has lightened up considerably, but still has good polyp extension. I've been adjusting flow and lighting but nothing seems to be helping with the coloring. More than likely the tank may not be completely ready for touchy SPS. From what I've read/heard, birdsnests can be the first indication that something water-quality wise is off. I have some test kits on the way so maybe I will identify something missing/deficient. The Montipora cap. is happy and growing though.

Also got a great Black Friday deal on a skimmer, should be here soon :celeb1:

Got the skimmer in the tank this morning. It is a Bubble Magus NAC3+ and I'm pretty happy with it so far. It is a little loud but I imagine it will quiet down a bit once it breaks in.

Along wih the skimmer I also recieved Salifert test kits for Ca, Mg, and Alk. I tried out the Ca test kit last night, and these things are intense! I did't realize it was going to be a full blown titration. It took me back to organic chem lab. I can definitely tell these are a few steps up from the quick dip sticks and API tests I'm used to. Ca tested at 420ppm :smokin:

I have the same three Saliferts and nitrate and phosphate Salifert. What I really like is that they're good for 2-3 years and much more accurate than API! Although more complicated procedures.

Very nice looking, really like the rock.

Sorry to hear about the Birdnest. Let us know how the skimmer does after its broke in will you? Interested in trying one out on a nano tank someday soon.
