29g bio-cube and a Peacock Mantis

1st off, would like to say, that i've learned a ton from these threads...love reading everyone's experiences and all the info posted on these amazing creatures.

So, after having my N.Wennerae in my little 3g pico....i've become hooked. Walked into to my LFS the other day and they have a 4 1/2" Peacock that was given to them...I want it but i need to see if my 29g Bio-cube can support a peacock. The tank is very well established...just a matter of me catching the 2 fish in it to make the swap. The tank has lots of LR (marshall island and fiji) and softies.

Question is...

Is the size of the tank sufficient enough for the peacock???

Cheers
Vincenzo

Plenty. Lots of folks just go with a standard 10 gallon for their mantis tanks. My mantis doesn't do a whole lot of moving around anyway, so he / she doesn't need much room

i personally dont think the bio cube would be good enough for the size peacock you said you wanted to buy.

the actual foot print of the tank is more important then the actual gallons.

i thinkn it should be enough, i have a 3-4in peacock in a 24g nano cube and so far she's been doing great and the tank has been handling the load fine. she's very active and healthy.

I think everybody who gets a mantis wants to improve the footprint before too long. My peacock is just barely 3 inches long now, and as soon as I can I'm upgrading her from a cube to something with a lot more area on the bottom to run around. I've got my eye on either an Aqueon 30 gallon breeder (36x18 on the bottom) or maybe something bigger off of craigslist. I saw a 125 gallon acrylic that was 72x18 and I think it would be fantastic overkill to put her in that.

a 24g nano cube is really not a good choice for a peacock around that size. the foot print of that tank is not nearly enough for a peacock to truley be happy and have the room that it needs. having a smaller peacock in that size tank for awhile would be perfectly fine. but thats like putting a hippo tang in a 20g tank and saying thats enough. it just isnt enough space for it to truley be able to grow and be happy.

i personally like the 40 breeder. i think that is a good match myself. a 125g tank would be awesome to have as a mantis tank. but thats alot of empty space for the peacock alone. if you add fish and some low light corals it could be a very cool tank and very active.

you can never go wrong with the 40 breeders. 18 inches wide? i mean come on! its perfect! not too big, not too small. it would be your cheapest way, for sure.

I also found that glasscages.com sells "wide" tanks. The 65 wide is 36x24x17 and the 70 wide is 48x24x13. How's that for a footprint?

they sell some really cool tanks out there that have a great foot print for a mantis and you could make it into a look down tank. i was looking into there website in the past and would love to eventually pick up one of them.

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm picking him up tomorrow and am taking the advice. I'd like to get a tank with a bigger 'footprint', acrylic.

What im looking for is a tank that doesnt have to much height...any ideas would be again, greatly appreciated!

For now, ill be keeping him in the 29g bio. Didnt want to pass this guy up, dont see them very often in this area.

Cheers all

You don't necessarily need acrylic for a peacock. I've never had any glass-beating problems with my two peacocks, but they were both females, I hear the males can be a bit wild. That internet place I mentioned, glasscages.com, sells acrylic models of most of their aquariums and they have a huge variety of dimensions. If you're going for glass, the Aqueon 30 breeder is short with the same footprint as the 40 breeder, which is just taller. (Though the 30 is quite short, 13 inches I think). You could also check craigslist in your area for a used acrylic tank, as they sometimes show up and that'll take some of the bite out of your wallet.

UGH....looks like I have a glass beater....non-stop on both sides of the tank!! I went to Home Depot and bought 2 pieces of acrylic and placed them 1 on each end inside the tank...hopefully that'll absorb the smashing until I can get a hold of an acrylic tank. He doesnt touch the front, just the sides.

He only seems to beat on it when i'm in the room...is he just telling me to feed him? I've spent a couple of hours in the next room just to hear him....nothing but silence....

You think this guy watches HGTV......as much as he decorates and redecorates the tank....I'm afraid if he takes anymore gravel out from under his rock, it'll fall and smash him!!

That's so funny. Mine never beats the glass. She beats on the live rock, and breaks chunks off of it, but she never touches the glass. The digging is worrisome at first, but mine is smart enough to shore up her burrows with small rocks to prevent a cave-in. They're actually really good engineers.

I see what you mean about good engineers.....he's grab one of my frags and wedge it in between the big rock and the back wall...I could just spend hours watching him

enzoo0000.....everyone is forgetting how Mantis' love to swim !!! and boy, are they every fast !!!!! Your getting a bigger footprint is wonderful...they love to roam and do their little backwards somersault into their burrow. Have you thought about gettint some PVC for her burrow? That would probably stop her/him hitting the tank sides as she would be too busy working on her
"castle"..lol I love to watch them build also. Good luck and I think you are on the right track to a fun pet.

this is my 29 biocube peacock tank
she is 3inchs long
