2Tall 185g - Build

In-A-Gadda-Divita!
The Tank/Stand:
Acrylic 45" long, 25" wide and 38" tall with 1" thick panels.
It has a steel tube welded stand that I had cut lowered; tank/stand was 6' 4" tall and was too close to me ceiling fan AND I would of needed a 6' ladder just to feed... I had the stand lowered 7" by my buddies at Loud Peddle Motorsports in Tempe. I needed the welding to obviously be done perfect and level and their welder did just that!
This tank was custom made to be a wall DT and was in a doctors office before I got it. The ends are black acrylic and the sides clear, I will be setting it up peninsula style in my bed room. It has a large weir/overflow from top to bottom, side to side that is about 20 gallons in volume. This space will make a a perfect refugium and will probably do 4" DSB there only; the DT will have 1" fine sand.

Aquascape:
Two columns of Marco Key Largo, maybe an arch?? These tall columns will be heavily supported with 1" acrylic rods and will be secure - the actual rock work will be a build in its self...

Plumbing/Sump/Refug:
Sump is commercial made 30 gallon and will be partially refug also. I figure with the limited bottom space of the DT (45" x 25") I would need all the refug/LR/LS space I can get.
It was drilled for 2 - 1" and 1 - 3/4" bulkheads; I drilled 3 more (my first hole drilling expedition) 1- 1" in the weir and 2 - 3/4" on the upper back of the weir for return lines. So now I have 2 - 1" on the bottom of the weir for the drains (2 Durso's), 2 - 3/4" in the weir for the return, a 1" and a 3/4" on the bottom of the display for a closed loop. I installed valves on all bottom bulkheads for safety/emergency reasons and currently have about 30 gallons of rodi in the tank for prelim testing. I'm trying to design the plumbing to be versatile with the ability to change things if I needed.

Current Equipment List:
* Reeflo Barracuda 4500gph
* Eheim 1260 745gph
* RPS2000 or RPS3000 Skimmer
* MP40wES (2)
* Korallin Calcium Reactor
* BSR Dual GFO/GAC reactors
* pH Air filter canister
* ATO/w 20g tank
* DIY 84 LED/7 Meanwell Drivers
* Heater 200w Titanium (2)
* Ronco Temp controller
* Reef Keeper Elite

The Other Tank:
My 55g, also my first SW tank, is currently in the spot this beast is being placed; I was planning on breaking it down, but it is doing so good and looks great so it will share the room with the beast... tomorrow I will remove the taller LR with corals into a holding tank, make sure the rest of the LR is secure, drain 30 gallons of water from it, drain the sump and move it about 10' across the room, refill it and hope for the best - been planning how I was going to do this for a while and with the help of a friend, I think all will be well.... With me luck :uhoh3:

Yes, I may indeed be crazy (or soon there after) for building a tank that is 38" deep, but I don't mind the maintenance and getting my head wet... for me it is just apart of this hobby that I love!
I welcome your input, ideas and suggestions - I will need it!
Thanks!

Good luck with this beast. I have a snorkle mask you can use. haha

Since your rocks will be secure, you shouldn't have to do the deep dive to often. Hopefully anyway.

Looking forward to the progress.

oh, the tank does look awesome.

Nice build... I had seen this CL for sale and I had considered it for a few minutes until I realized I am too short to even put the rocks in right. And my luck I would have fallen in when no one was home to help me out!!

Looks great... Let me know if you need help with anything.. i will help is i have the time between school and the son. are you going to leave the white grate in.... you should wrap it with screen and maybe even double it up to have that plenum effect in your tank. I did it in my sump then added crushed coral to it.....
FYI i have some crushed coral with your sumps name on it!!!!!

Got the 55 safely moved across the room and the 185 in it's new home! We drained the sump, drained about 30 gallons from the DT, removed a large LR and canopy. Reinforced the wood stand with several screws, made a PVC lift bar that went under the tank, through the stand and we lifted and dragged the sucker into place, then filled it back up. The RBTA was a bit mad, but was back to being fully expanded this morning. I did have 2 55g Rubbermaid's ready in case of disaster, but all went perfect.
I certainly would not suggest this approach to anything bigger than a 55...

Starting the plumbing tonight on the big one and hope to have flow by Sunday, aquascape by this time next week; then its cycle time! Will get pics up as I go.

The plumbing is complete after a good 10 hours of work today, leak tested all good.
Will be filling it through tomorrow as the RODI is made and getting the sand in, then I will adjust the dual Durso's.
Not going to have room for the RPS2000 or RPS3000 skimmer, so will be doing some research on a super skimmer that will fit in the sump - working hard to keep all equipment contained within the stand as will also be skinning it in wood in due time.
Also started working on the aquascape, drilling 3/4" and 1" holes in the Marco rock for the acrylic support rods. Will post pics of this in a few day.

Still filling with rodi, should be done today and have the pump and sump up and running.
Aquascape next...

Got it filled and running over the weekend, but...

Had to change out the dual 1.5" durso's with a Herbie style drain. The Durso's were WAY too noisy and I could not get them fine tuned enough and they would violently shake; maybe draining from this height (38") the Durso's will not function as normal?? The Herbie style works beautifully and is dead silent. Never tried a Herbie, but liking it, almost got it dialed in making sure it is safe in a power outage - my weir is about 20 gallons, but also has drain slots low in the tank, so the tank would drain not just the weir...

I was using a Reeflo Barracuda (4500ghp) but switched to a Dart (3500gph) and the dart is perfect and much quieter; just waiting on a seal kit to proceed.
I also ordered another 50lbs of Marco Key Largo rock, bring the total rock to about 150lbs; that will be here tomorrow and I can further work on the aquascape. I will post pics when I get further along on the rock. Really wanting to get this stuff done so I can start cycling the tank! Using all new rock and sand as I want a good clean pest free start to this tank.
You ever get half way through a build and think what the #*@^ was I thinking?! ha
All these little delays have actually been a gift as I am able to further work out any problems, discover new ones and come up with new ideas.
:)
