3" or 2" or 1" sand/crushed substrate?

Hi,

Wondering if I should create a deeper sand bed in my Aquapod now before I get my mantis.

Currently have 1" of Aragonite in my tank, a nice pile of rubble 1"x1"x1" LR and about 15lbs of LR.

Ideally will get a juvenile peacock or smithi, cilitia, virdi and make a reef.

I typically aim for 2-3" of sand in my mantis tanks, but they all live in holes in the liverock and don't do much burrowing.

I dont generally encourage peacocks as a reef safe mantis just because they get too big, so make sure you are prepared to upgrade when it does get too big.

well... generally at least. I really dont encourage it at any rate. Right now Im sort of experimenting with that with my 5 inch peacock in a mixed LPS, SPS reef. Softies seem to be of almost zero concern to the mantis. It hasn't been long in the reef, maybe a month or so, but it hasn't caused quite as much damage as I thought it might. The only notable damage was taking a chunk out of a green monti cap that was a bit too close to its burrow. Of course im still going to let this tank run for a while longer to make sure; long enough at least to see how it fares with larger coral colonies. For now, Im still sticking to the "peacocks are not reef safe" point of view until I have a decent experience to say otherwise.

I'd say you're fine with the small smashers. The P. ciliata would like to burrow. It's generally a good practice to provide a peacock with a PVC burrow, which will require considerably more sand. You could put in lots of rubble and let it make its own burrow, but if you have any substantial amount of light you risk increasing the chances of shell disease.

Sorry I wasn't more clear... I only meant to imply that all of MY mantis live in rocks... not ALL mantis. :)

my peacock digs, burrows, climbs all over the tank, builds, steals corals... whatever.. hes hysterical..

i have about 4 and a half inches of sand and sometimes he just sits there and digs in it like a dog, and makes this giant pile in one spot, scoops little piles from the front of the tank and moves it to the back of the tank and so forth.. I think hes a bit neurotic lol.

id give him at least 2-3" and some stuff to play with.. like rubble of course :) and make sure you have some big rocks to create a cave for him to get out of the light and youll be all good.

Good Luck!
Jess
