well we just got a 3 stage ro unit from lowes, i told my dad we needed like a 5 stage or around there , but he wouldnt listen, is a 3 stage going to be enough to be able the use the water for my reef tanks?

The prefilters are important, they should be 1 micron or less. You can also get an add on DI if you want it.

I think the more stages in the ro, the less "wear" it will take on the filters.
Therefore, the more stages, you won't have to change the filters out as often. Since filter replacements are kinda expensive, and I have moderately hard water in onondaga county.. I got more stages.
There's 3 great great threads on RC about ro/di units by "The Lazy Reefkeeper". I'll try to find the links to them later tonight.
They're really funny and also informational.
As far as vendors, I'm happy with purchasing a Typhoon III @ www.airwaterice.com .... but I hear great things about www.buckeyefieldsupply.com as well.

well the 3 stage was $160 i think, we could have probley found a better one, i think our water is pretty good here in vestal

This is a 5 stage for 139... it would be the same with shipping as the one he got at lowes.
I randomly mentioned I was a reefcentral member when I ordered, and they said that I get a free float valve.

at the lowes down here, the filters on the 3 stage units are duel 5 micron filters and one 1 micron for chlorine, if its the same, i would keep one 5 micron, one 1 micron, and make a stage of the ion resin exchange, sand looking stuff, wich has like 4 different colors of resin , which is for the deionization of your filtered water....that would just fine for making ro, the 5 micron gets the bigger particles, but most homes already have one of them on there water supply line, so you might want to look into that, if thats so then go with duel 1 micon filters, along with that sandy stuff wich i think cost around 50 dollars for a good replacement cartridge that would work great for you...but i also think you can get the normal resin deionization filter for around 30
