3 Tangs - 180g

Hey guys,

I want to put 3 tangs in my tank eventually. Just researching to see what works. It's a 72x24x24 tank.

Currently I'm thinking of a yellow and a Cole. Undecided on the third.

Recommendations?
Stocking order?

Thanks!

That's doable. I don't know which tangs you like, so I can't suggest the 3rd. But let me help you with some that I personally don't feel WILL work:

Any naso (get too big), sohal (too mean and need larger tank), clown (same as sohal), yellow (2 won't work together).

Actually I CAN suggest your 3rd...Acanthurus Pyroferus...chocolate tang or mimic tang, or chocolate mimic tang. lol My favorite tang and would probably work with your lineup if added properly since all 3 are from seperate families. I'd add the Kole first, then the mimic and then a smaller yellow. Don't forget to QT them.

My tank is 72x18x26 and I have a purple, chevron, and pacific blue tang. They all get along fine. I set my rock work up with as much swimming room as possable. I hope they will stay well behaved as they get larger.

+1 on the mimic it's one of my favs but with my lineup I can't have one, and as far as having two yellows in my " experience " if you add two at the same time it is possible not 100% but possible.

I have a 180 72x24x24. I have a sohal, Naso and Purple. Yes, the sohal and Naso will get too big. however my sohal is a puppy dog compared to the purple.

thanks guys.

I definitely want the 3rd one to not be huge. Don't want something I will eventually need to remove.

Never heard of Mimic Tang! Local LFS doesn't carry them....

Also never heard of Pyroferus!

I had until recently 3 tangs in my 180 standard, a binotatus (blue eye kole)which I just lost to an internal parasite, a sailfin, and a mimic and all of them got along well. Both the yellow and kole are ideally sized for a 180 and several of the Acanthurus genus stay fairly small and like tampa reefer stated mixing different genus is usually a good strategy for success. I love my mimic, Acanthurus pyroferus, one of the three mimic tang species but I am not sure how it would get along with a yellow tang since most of the common mimic species are yellow as juveniles.

If this was my system I would add one of the smaller and mellower Acanthurus tangs like a convict or a mimic to the tangs you have already selected, and would add them in the following order; kole, Acanthurus species, yellow. Or perhaps add the yellow and Acanthurus at the same time.

It is always best to add them at the same time but can be more stressful to a newer tank. I agree with kahuna about the mimic as a juvi if you decide to try one see if you can find one that is changing as it would reduce the battle between it and a yellow. My yellows kicked the crap out of a lemonpeel angel which is similar to a juvi mimic.

This is one of the mimic tangs. They mimic dwarf angels when they are juveniles and have a different coloration as adults. They are great fish and have a pretty mild temperament for an Acanthurus tang.

I hope that your avatar isn't your tank. If it is, they outgrew that tank long ago.

Actually, yes that is the pair. they came from a 180 at this size. I bought them off a guy who was getting out about an hour south of me. I didnt realize they were this size till I picked them up. I plan to remove them both within the next few months and either take them to the LFS or to the State Aquarium. Sadly though, ill have to do the purple too as he is a monster as well. the Sohal is a puppy. will actually chew on my fingers thinking I have food to offer him.

From what I have witnessed, the Naso will likely be the first to go due to his nature of back and forth. the Sohal has shown very little aggression toward any of the inhabitants. Initially I had planned all 3 of these fish, but had hoped to buy them all as juviniles, but it just didnt work out and I could not pass the deal on the Sohal and Naso for $50 each.

Marmot. if you add them at the same time, chances are yes. If they are added seperately, then I would hesitate as they are very similar fish.

Avoid Powder Blues. It's temping, but I can personally attest that it will not work in the long run.

I've done everything possible to accomodate the fish, basically designed my entire system around him. He is just too aggressive. My yellow tang is allowed 1/3 of the tank to roam, and no there is absolutely 0 chance of me getting him to co-exist with another tang on top of that.

Beautiful fish, but a 180 is just a bit too small once they are fully grown.

Good thread, I'm going to tag along :). What about people's experience with the white cheek tang? I've got to be on the look out for the mimic tang, they seem easier to get. Currently I have a 2 spot and a royal blue in my tank.

hmmmmm....... They don't look very big next to the veggie clip. I guess if they were towards the back of the tank when the picture was taken? honestly it's hard to tell how big they are from the one pic. They look fat and happy though.

i had a 12 that was 6 feet long and i had 2 yellow tangs in it. the only problem was some days the pair got along and then other days the less aggressive one would get the snot kicked out of him that lasted for about 5 months then i finally broke down and took one of them out.
