3 yellow tangs!!!

I would move a few rocks around or add/take away some to re-establish the dominance hierarchy. Seems like the only thing you havent tried?...

Also I have had a yellow wrasse that would kill anything yellow in it(tang, chromis, gramma, even a damsel!!!) ..could be the same idea with the PT.

Tangs added to DT at 5am, back in QT by 5pm"¦..after I decided I had seen enough; it took about 3 hours to remove them, a few knocked over corals, water all over the floor, and a major headache. When the aggression got bad even my flame angel got in the mix. Surprisingly my chocolate tang was the initial aggressor, and then the PT, who at first seemed to ignore the yellows. Through it all my hippo tang never bothered anyone, and he generally chases everyone from time to time. I guess that's why I consider the hippo tang the best reef fish. What's next? No more tangs, and I guess I will give these guys to my LFS. i really should have known better, but i talked myself into giving this a try....:debi:

I have been following to see what happens, sorry it didn't work out, you see both sides of this all the time, I always question how my LFS gets away with 20+ 4"-5" in a 50gal breeder of yellow's, sometimes in there for months together, always wondered that because it is a bare tank then there is not territory to fight over?

just to follow-up....the 3 yellows are doing well in QT, despite it only being a 20 gallon. there is very little aggression and they are eating well. i would think they would be very aggressive to each other, as that has been my experience in the past. I’m considering keeping them, moving them to my 55g so they can get larger, and reintroducing them to the 281g in a few months?

thx everyone for your comments and advice!!!

I've had a lot of success using a acclimation box for new additions. After QT I keep them in there for a couple days and let all the other fish get used to seeing them. For me it's really made a big difference in new comer aggression

update....as many here have suggested, and thank you, an acclimation box. it will be tight for 3 yellow tangs, but only for a short time; i hope it will help. Also, a forth fish will be added when the 3 yellows are released from the box. a Magnificent Foxface, any thoughts about my plan???

the foxface, about 5", much larger than the 3 yellows tangs and a little smaller than my hippo.

in my experience, adding more fish at the same time helps increase confusion and diffuse aggression, all of this of course assuming that your tank can handle it. I've added many otherwise seemingly incompatible fish that way. Good luck.

Your tank looks very nice BTW. Love that Xenia rock, but smart to keep it separate. I've had xenia over-run my tank before.

I had a Kole tang that was an absolute A$$hole. He had killed a Blue(hippo), Foxface, and a few chromis. After spending 2 weeks trying to catch the bastard, I decided to really rock his world. I added 5 yellows. He didn't know who to chase first. All seemed right with the world again. Since then, a Naso, a Purple and Tomini have gone in. Every once in a while, one of the yellows will take a run at one of the others, but never any damage. All happy and eating well.
Oh, should mention, all these tangs are in a 240 SPS reef.

yes, i hope the 4 fish idea will work, also the box with the tangs in view for a couple of weeks, before mass release.

i really like xenia too, however, i tried to keep it seperate but it got to some other rocks. Now i have to really stop its advance, any signs of it elsewhere i dig it out.

My thoughts exactly. At one point I had 6 yellow tangs in my 220. Now I only have 4 because that died on me, but never noticed any aggression that caused me to panic. I think the key to having multiple tangs is having areas in your rock work that will allow them to dart through if they feel frightened. Each of the 4 tangs has his/her own place at night to sleep so they aren't fighting each other for territory. Not to mention that I also have a sailfin tang in there as well.

I will be adding a Chevron and Achilles tang in the future. Somebody call the tang police!!!

update: The purple tang has finally approached the box, and now is trying to "œget at" the yellows. I was surprised it took three days and was thinking the PT would stay too far from the box and never see the yellows. I think this is the beginning of the process. Soon, I hope the purple tang will accept the yellows presents and then I will release them with the foxface, maybe in a week or two.

blenny is doing ok; he will be added to the DT saturday! I don't think he will survive much longer in QT, as there is very little food for him. I have added pieces of live rock and he eats the little bit of algae on them, but it is not enough.

any update? How is the PT reacting to the yellows now?

nothing much to update, 3 yellows still in box and doing well; pt looks at them offen. plan has not changed, however, i'm thinking about getting a purple tilefish and 5 lyretail anthias (on my long term list) and releasing all 10 fish at once?
