just used some muriatic acid from ace hardwhare. they had some other stuff that was not saposed to burn your skin but i figured it was not the stuff i wanted so i just went with plane jane acid.

That is what I'll pick up. I'm assuming you just rinse them off real good afterwards and then start the curing process?

You want to add baking soda to it to neutralize the acid after the bubbles die down. I use two boxes in a 30-40g tub

the baking soda is not needed if you have a place to dump it that it wont kill or harm anything. bur yes rince it really good. ill be soaking it all in rodi withe some prime to help neutrlize any chlorine left behind. ill let it set in the rodi for a week or so and then ill put in a barrel with some live rock to get it started while i plumb my tank and finish getting the rest of the stuff i need together.

Please put the baking soda in if you acid wash stuff. There are tons of animals that it could effect if you don't. I have read one report of someone dumping it behind there house and coming out the next day to several dead birds.

i dumped it in the rocks infront of my house where i had a hose running im pretty sure the block down the street took care of it.

Correct me if I am wrong. If you leave the rock in the acid long enough for the reaction to stop (it dont buble no mores) then shouldn't the solution be fairly neutral?

Thanks. I'll do that since the water will be dumped in an area where my dogs could possibly get to it. I don't want to have to worry that.

I hadn't thought about using prime to neutralize any of the remnants of the tap water rinsing. That is something that I'll want to do too.

I've already got a fair amount of dry rock that I ordered online rinsing off in RODI. Once I get that dirty rock we picked up this past weekend acid washed and RODI soaked, I'll have a BIG pile of rocks to start curing in warm saltwater and seeding with live rock. Good thing I just picked up that 150 gallon trough from Tractor Supply!
