300 gal reef re-do

Well, I currently have Jallis but wehn I started my system I bought 3 Jalli controllers and 4 elements. I have purchased at least one more element since, currently have one good controller and one or two good elements.

When this last controller goes TU on me, I will switch to Medussa/AquaLogic...I am sick of frying controllers and elements. It really ticks me off, and that's why i use the double-up method. Even though I have fried at least 4 of the elements, I have never had a problem with the tank.

That way it's a double check. If the AC probe is bad, it will energize the heater, but the heater probe will keep it from coming on until it needs to be. DOes that make sense?

hmm, can you go over that again? I use an acII, but not quite following you, how does the ext controller hook to the ac? the last sentence....lost me

AC Controller ---> Heater Controller ---> Heater Probe --->Heater Element

So the AC probe tells it that the tank is cool and the heater should turn on. It applies power to the outlet the heater controller is plugged into. So the heater controller has power now and its own probe. The question is, does its probe agree and allow the heater element to be powered on?

In this case, if either probe is faulty, you still have the backup probe. If the heater probe malfunction, the heater will only get power if the AC Controller probe allows it, and vice versa.

I hope that makse better sense, but I would be glad to discuss it more if needed.
 
but if the ac probe is faulty and does not power the outlet that the heater controller is plugged into, no heat right? so in this case no back up?
 
True, that's why you have two of them. But no heat is much better than super heat. I always run two heaters. I run 2 x 800W on my system.

Plus with the controller, you have alarms for out-of-state conditions. With mine there are audible alarms, email messages, and screen prompts at my office PC.
 
It figures it had to happen the week the temp was in the teens up here. I here you Jonathan. I should do a failsafe. Maybe break up the heaters instead of all running off one controller. It bites losing about $700 in one pop. Its going to be a while before I add any more corals.

No sorry. I am not describing this too well. My fault. I run one heater/controller off the ACIII Pro, and one to regular house power. And I size them to be able to handle about 2/3 load. But you have to realize, mine don't run very often because of my water volume and high powered lamps.

I honestly don't have to rely on heaters much.
 
Hey Paul just got done reading your thread. Great job man!I love the skimmer, and reactor box idea you got off of Johnathan. Reading your thread brought me a little closer to the people here on RC. I am getting my 300 soon and am researching all the 300 systems on this forum. thank for the great pictures. Your work is wonderful. Happy New year :)

Not much to update here. The ich is gone from all the fish in hypo. They still have another month to go so the fish and main tank can get rid off all those buggers.

Now that the sps are gone the reef looks pretty sad with just a few lps.
 
Over the years i found the joy for me was the build and adding corals. Now that i have complete my 120 i am bored to death! Just think of all the wonderful corals your going to get to re-stock with! I am excited for you :) I will refrain from posting a picture of The Shelf. I could fill a tank with the losses up there. (but my wife seems to like those best. (if she only knew the cost of her shelf ;) )
 
I have a suggestion on reintroducing the fish to the main display. Add them back slowly and watch for signs of trouble with each one. When treating fish for ich and other parasites their immune system drops and there more venerable when tossed into a reef environment. I have a friend in another forum that just went through all the right procedures treating for ich, (two months in QT with copper treatment) a few days after adding the fish back to the tank they showed signs of ich again. I am starting to wonder if the cycle can really be broken in a reef setting by just removing the fish. I am wondering about snails now and other life forms for the parasite to feed on when the fish is removed. Just a heads up.
 
Haven't kept up with the post the past few weeks. We had to put our 12 year old Golden Retriever down and I've been pretty bummed.

The fish are back and doing fine. I've decided not to replace the SPS. That last lost really hurt. I'll keep the LPS. I just put in a couple of new guys that I wouldn't have tried with the SPS because of the waste load. The Zebra moray is huge, about 30", but so gentile. He takes shrimp out of my hands. The Epaulette shark is awesome to watch. Not active during the day, but very cool at night and feeding time.

Oh, I am so sorry about your dog Paul. I have been through similar experiences and it was not easy.
My friend Dave has a zebra moray in his reef also and says nothing but good about the animal.
 
Actually, the only small fish I have is my 1st damsel. He's seen it all the past 5 years or so. The shark doesn't even look at him. He gets a nice shrimp every other day and he's happy. Its funny watching the shark and eel together. They share the same cave and the shark likes to cuddle under the eels body to sleep.
