300G inwall 'stalled'

Yeah I suppose your right about the turnover rate, I did just read a bunch of people's opinions on that. I wonder if there are any real studies with real evidence as to what a proper turnover rate should be.

And thanks for all the advice on the skimmer, I never tried closing the air valves, they've always been fully open. Do you suggest I close them a bit? I like your technique on cleaning the air intake of the pumps, I think I'll give that a shot when I get home.

For sure close them to 2:00 o'clock and adjust from there! Make sure air intake is clean and it's going to now skim like a beast!

Thank you, I will try that and let you know what happens. Watch the cup fill up all the way, like 2 gallons of skimmate lol

Another tip if you have not done it... And being used ya never know what previous owners 'care' was. Take off all the air lines, clean and flush with hot water. After you know they are clean every so often tip the intake end of the airline into a cup of hot water or ro/di water to keep them dust free and limit salt creep build up at the other end.

For sure let me know the difference, I suspect it's going to be huge.

Thank you so much for your advice on the skimmer!!! I cleaned the air inlets with a drill bit like you suggest and they were pretty stuffed up, one was almost fully clogged with salt creep, really had to force it in. I was in a hurry so I only got a chance to clean out the pump part and turn the air valave to 2 o'clock so when I get home tonight I'll be cleaning the airline tubes and see what comes out of those lol

I went down to check on the tank this morning and the skimmer is definitely performing much better, so much more foam coming out of it, we'll see the mess I find tonight when I get home lol

Thanks again!

Your welcome, glad I could help. Cleaning the air lines is way less important and it will most likely not effect any thing except you'll know they are clean.

So thanks to all your advice, my skimmer is skimming better than ever, really didn't think it was capable of performing any better since it's already a beast but it definitely is! Thanks so much and I will be following your thread to see your progress and hopefully provide any guidance I can if need be.

Another mini stall, took on a big backyard landscape project that I thought would never end, it's done.

Got this box today

Cant believe how nice the build quality is with Reef dynamics, so nice.

I hope to have water in the tank by the end of the weekend, I think I have everything, I hope I do... we'll see soon.

Side weir overflow being installed. Starboard bottom in, tank is done had to also wait for the silicone to cure, she's good to go.

Hard to get a good picture big tank small room syndrome.

Tank's looking good!

For a tank to sump turnover rate, I think it depends on how full of life your tank is. A tank with stocking levels on the low side won't require as much filtration as one with higher levels. I would start out low and keep an eye on how clear the water stays. Increase the flow to the sump as you like.
On my 600g, I'm only doing a 1X/hour turnover rate, using closed loop, MP60's and Tunze powerheads to keep the display tank circulation of around 15X - 20X (so around 10,000g/hour)

Hey Mitch

Thanks! I agree on your turn over rate advice. Do you have a thread going on RC? What are you stocking these days?

Had to live up to the stalled name of my thread but I'll have some updates.
Stalled so long "¦

Here you can see my 200G sump. Started some plumping.

Everyone needs one of theses pics:

Running all DC pumps using these and a few more on back order"¦

A bit more plumping and a big RO water container. The biggest mistake I made on this build was buying so much rock way to early. Takes up way to much space in a already small room.

This is a really well build tech looking product I'll be using for auto continuous water changes. Stenner pump.

Water testing.

It's holding water!

Ocean Motion hooked up to the 12000 for the closed loop.

Its been full of fresh water for a week now running the Waveline 12000 full speed on my closed loop. A 12000 also on my sump return dialled back a bit. Pretty happy with the pumps so far, super quiet. Looking forward to the energy saving in the long run.

No leaks!

Working on my RO water and salt mixing set up I'll post those up soon. From there all start making salt water then lighting and then every thing else…

From the front view, the wall will be finished one day.

Thanks for looking!!

Looking at two closed loop out takes on the back wall, four returns from that, one sump return (far right up high) and a 15" weir flowing into a been style overflow box.

I strongly suggest you rethink that front cap and put in a flap instead so that you can access the tank from both sides.

That has always been a thought for sure and I have not ruled it out. I'm sure it would be better then not having it but with a completely open back in a fish room it is already substantially more access then I've ever had on any tank.
The size of the space if I removed the current front cap would be really small and any access would be really limited from the front. I'll measure it up and think more on it, thanks for the advice.

Nice update.

I, too, got the same Stinner pump.

How do you like the lifebreath?

Worm the Stenner Pump, I got the pump direction from your thread and the link to the other thread using it, researched it all and seems like a great idea.
My plan is to have the waste water form the DT flow into the QT tanks, coral QT tank for sure then fish QT tanks. Was thinking a simple tubing system with values so I can direct the water to what ever tank needs a water change. I see it being really beneficial for the coral QT tank so I don't have to worry about having a second set of equipment like skimmers and such on a QT system. A constant flow through the coral Qt as the Stenner pump is auto changing DT water. Thoughts?

Worm what the plan with your Stenner?

The Lifebreath unit is great, serious over kill for the room. I recycled the unit from my previous house where the unit did my entire house. I do wish I had installed it on the other side of the wall so it was not actually in the room taking up valuable space. Except that would've opened up issues on the other side of the wall. IE. smashing head on it daily as it's a hallway.

Yeah I agree on the Stenner pump. I plan on doing the same thing. This weekend I replanned a few things from my previous ideas..

From NewSW -> DT (fist part of pump)
From DT -> QT (second part of pump)
THEN
QT -> Gravity fed overflow to drain.

I had been looking at a lifebreath for my house for a while.. (like years) Have not pulled the trigger though, and I have the space setup where it would go straight into the feed/return duct work.

Hi Dave,

No build thread here, but over on the Canadian site.

Nice tank. You said Custom built if for you, but did you mean Concepts? I haven't heard of Custom Aquariums before.
I just recently switched over my tank from trying a proper DSB to a bare bottom SPS. It's pretty much impossible to get what you need to do a proper DSB in Canada.
So, starting up from scratch as of a couple of months ago.

You've got a great setup up going. It'll be nice to watch your updates.
Which Mitras do you have? The 6100's or 6200's?
I have 1 6100 and 2 6200 plus 2 4' ATI hybrids. You're probably going to need to add more lights eventually.
