300gal. DD build

looking good tagging along for this sw in your sump that your skimmer was sitting awfully low in the water was justing wondering if it shouldnt be higher in the water

agreed about skimmer height. A stand is ez to make. Tank looks great, i built my tank and stand as well, its a 60x30x27 tank and a 40" tall stand wrapped in birch stained lightly to show the grain. Building the tank was truly awesome. I think for flow inside a big wavebox and 2xtunze6105s would work great. Thats what i use along with a reeflo hammerhead gold for the return threw a 1.5hp chiller.

Yeah the aquascaping came out much better than anticipated.

The skimmer is "neck deep" in the sump. It has been working well though - I thought I'd try it and if it was too deep I'd put some egg crate under it but it is pulling lots of junk out of the water already. I'll just keep watching it and raise it if necessary.

The LED lights are amazing. My corals and anemones are opening up big and noticably growing already. Hoping my electric bill comes down. =)

Just picked up some more livestock yesterday. A Yellow Tang, a RBTA with a pair of Clowns, a big rock with some shrooms, and Xenia, an Urchin, and about 20 snails. Check it out. =)

Update with good and bad news.

Good news is that this tank has blossomed into an amazing reef. I never thought it would look so nice and all my parameters are perfect. Corals are opening up huge and spreading.

Bad news: I noticed one end (side pane of glass) is sticking out about 1/8" past the front pane of glass. (Should be flush as the side butts up to the front pane.) I can also see where the silicone seal has moved. (I can see light through the black silicone, running up and down in the sealant.) I'm worried. Not sure if it has always been this way or has moved since I got the tank. I'll be adding a pic soon. Maybe someone out there has had a similar experience? What can I do besides drain and reseal?

Have you called marineland yet? I talked to them about a few discrepancies in my setup, shared with them a few images, and they said it was all within their defined tolerances.

i agree. If its inside the warranty you should make them fix it or build you a new one. David00061 had the same problem with another aquarium maker and they fixed it for him.

Looks Great, I have the exact tank and original stand. I wish i build a new one as the one it came with is wayyy to low.

now i have to build a new stand then move the 300G on to the new stand.

Update: My brace seems to be holding and no leaks as of yet. I check it everyday and hope things stay this way. lol

Heres a pic:

Wow, you're brave. After all that we went through I would feel a stronger sense of urgency to get your tank looked at by the manufacturer.

The tank really looks nice with what you've done so far - nice work!

Thanks - I'm watching it like a hawk. I am already considering a new tank - perhaps even larger for a penninsula type room divider with a bar built in under it. I could then remove everything from my current tank and repair it.

That being said, I do have a complaint about the 300gal. DD. Looking at it from the front, it appears to be about 180gal. From the ends it looks much shorter. The water creates the illusion that the tank is not as big as it is. I'm going to shoot for an even taller tank in the future.

Awesome tank! I really like the aquascaping.

Thanks it turned out much better than I had expected. The water flow is good throughout the entire tank. My last tank had problems with nitrates because of the deadspot of stagnant water in the back behind all the rocks.

I easily maintain 0 nitrates now with the waterflow and the refugium full of macroalgae seems to help too.

Well my tank has turned into so much more than I had anticipated. I've added lots of good rock and livestock. I have several tangs including a Red Sea Sailfin, 2 Yellow, a Unicorn, and a Chocolate Mimic. I have so many fish I cannot keep track of them all - including 4 Diamond Gobies which keep my sandbed absolutely spotless. All the fish seem to get along great and are very fat and happy. The added bioload has me increasing my daily maintenance as well as doing weekly waterchanges. (10%)

The corals are growing well and have spread all over.

sweet looking tank right here. I like softies and the aquascape you have. what are the specs of the tank and equipment?

Thanks! The pic above was just the white lights and no actinic.

The tank is a 300gal. DD tank. (6'x3'x2')
The lights are 3x120watt LED pendants.
The skimmer is a larger Reef Octopus in a 75gal. sump that I baffled and made a refugium in. The 'fuge has lots of sand, Chaeto, and Flame Algae. My nitrates stay at 0 even with a huge bioload.

I love the 3 foot deep tanks..id trade the height of my tank for the width of yours...im about to watch your vid when it loads. and if the system is happy I wouldn't worry about bioload, obviously your not but you know what I mean. lol....
