After four years with a Red Sea AIO 20 gal, the holiday sales at Bulk Reef Supply prompted an upgrade! This is my experience so far with the Maxspect Lagoon 32 gallon LS-060 Smart Aquarium.
The livestock is around 20 Chicago Sunburst BTAs, a GSP rock, and a large Cali tort colony, and a pair of clowns.
To put it quickly - very high quality materials. From the shipping crate and packing, to the glass and accessories, to the stand itself, all look very nice and well made. The stand assembly was cake and all went together very nicely. *Maxspect actually ships EXTRA cabinet panels and a door with the system incase of damage during shipping and sure enough, some of the ink on the packing materials rubbed off on the white cabinet, so I appreciate they prep for that (although you would think they just wouldn't print on the packing materials).
The system comes with the glass tank, stand, sump, plumbing, return pump, gyre wave maker, skimmer, and central controller. It all ties into the Syna-G app (which leaves a bit to be desired) so you can control and monitor everything in one place.
*During assembly, I noticed that there was a very small chip on the inside of the glass in a corner. It was partially under the silicon, so it looks like it was built that way. It was small enough that it likely wouldn't have caused any issues, but I wasn't taking any chances with almost 50 gallons of saltwater in our house. BRS went above and beyond and actually sent me a complete new system, not just a tank. Stand up customer service from BRS so they definitely earned a customer for life there.
Once the new tank was received and examined, it was perfect, so assembly continues. The tank, sump, and plumbing is all very straight forward and easy to assemble. The controller is well labeled, but how they expect us to get all those cords through the slot in the back is wishful thinking.
The old tank was partially drained, a temp holding bin for the livestock was prepped, and the new tank slid into place. Once the livestock was all transferred to a much roomier home, we filled it up and turned it on. Turning the pumps on with the app was a little clunky, but once I finally figured out where everything was, got it up and running. Unfortunately, both return pipes (pre assembled) started dripping from the seals! We even swapped the extra set in from the spare system BRS sent and those leaked too! Thankfully they just drip into the sump, so I'm in the process of sealing those up and will swap them back out soon.
I also added the Maxspect MJ-L290 to replace my Radion XR-15 and to keep all the tank stuff in the same app. Paired that easily and we're up and running. The Gyre, even at 10% is incredibly strong and blew sand everywhere, so I took one of the props off and capped it and it's much more manageable now. The skimmer is a monster and I wish I could schedule it to automatically go on and off during the week, but the app is limited to on and off only, so I have it on the lowest setting for a pretty dry skim.
Despite the chipped glass and the leaking pipes, overall I'm very impressed with the entire system. Again, props to BRS for the incredible customer service.
