So just to bring you guys up to date on this build that I've been doing.

So I have had a ten gallon the first one that I used an led par 30 and had some corals a anemone and clownfish. I upgraded to a 20long and everythings in there. I got a tank from craigslist that was free so I picked it up.

It was 22 x 30 x 12

I removed the trim and the front of the tank. I cut it and sanded it at 12 inches now I have a rimless shallow 33 gallon.

I built the stand out of 3/4 plywood and painted it with black paint

I have been waiting to drill it for a bulkhead with a strainer something I found online. 1 inch bulkhead with 1 5/8 hole saw which is almost here.

I was going to use the 20l and keep it but well i'm a slight addict and want something big enough for a small angelfish at least.

So I was using a little zerowater pitcher and well with a 40gallon system I went ahead and bought a ro filter.

I was hoping to stay with 20l and use the par 30 and add a par38 well I cme across a deal on a odessy 250 watt with 4 24watt t5ho and moonlights. which will work perfect on this new tank that's a lil over 10 watts a gallon on a shallow tank.
Which I want to have a mixed reef but mostly sps corals.

Anyhow I have been letting corals grow and keeping fish in quarantine for the system.

I'm going to be using the ten gallon quary as a sump with a protein skimmer and rio 2100 for return. And the 20l will be my quarantine for other fish to be added.

The only thing i'm waiting on now is the drill bit to knock a hole and the tank is ready. And put buble trap glass in sump.

I've got a few powerheads that will give me about 100times turnover.

I really need to get a new ballast and bulbs for the fixture but will hold off for a couples months till the tank has established and is fully stocked.

Small update:

So the tank is going good. I have decided to not buy a skimmer and spend the money on what I really need Bulbs.

So I order a top off system for a little more stability and I'm sick of pouring water all the time.

So I watched Julian Sprungs tank here is link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_MfOHz_kxw. He doesn't run a skimmer as you can see in this video. As well as some other tanks from Mr saltwater videos on refugium. Mr saltwater is what I watched as a begineer and has interesting and helpful videos.

Also Another awesome reefer Mike Paletto who uses refugiums.

So I decided to go with a refugium as I have access to South Padre Island (lol my refuge) which I'm Going to next week have a lot of great sea plants similar to mangroves and under water plants in Luguna bay as well as great fine tan sand. The sand is much like the pink stuff in size and is super clean.

This is what I will start my refugium with I will take some pictures when I'm there. I will buy some reef macros as well cheato and maybe some others. I've got a green mushroom that will down there to just to make it cool also It hates the mh too much for mushrooms

Here is where it will go also some biofilter stuff that's got narleyness on it.

Oh and the second picture I never go anywhere Theres not a coral reef LOL!
Gotta connect my fuge to my coral reef ye no

I am only a few miles from refugio TX ?L?OL

Hi Cody, I am headed to port aransas and will also collect mud from the back bays to try. Have you seen any black spots where it becomes anoxic. How deep is the refugiym mud in your aq. How deep did you dig. And how well did it transport back home. I have a 6 hour drive on the way back and plan to put an aerator in it.

Hi Cody one more question post. How has that sargasso holding up. If it starts to deteriorate I would recommend removing it quickly. If it is thriving what light are u using? The sargasso that I have had in tanks waiting for driving home crashed and crashed the small tanks I was using. All critters died. My next collection will be without sargasso. I plan on using plastic plants as a refuge. Did u collect any grass?

I used about 4 inches on one side and about 2.5 to the other. In a 12x10 area. Things have been going good. My mangrove has grown a lot more I bought a bigger cfl bulb for it 25watts. I also use a par 30 for chaeto.

Growth of my mangrove and added another out of in water plant. I also am using two 25 watt cfls for the refugium. No other filtration. the other picture is to compare t5ho lights. Have not cleaned the glass in over a month and I can still see in.
