350 plywood aquarium build

Lack of update from the OP is not encouraging - hope all is well with the tank. I built a large plywood tank back in about 1992 and had all sorts of problems with it. Although the problems were design-related, I never attempted one again. Frankly, you can buy a big glass tank for not much more money than a DIY plywood job.

I am building plywood tank and getting all the material ready. I have been through tons of threads and did hours of reading with type of sealers and structure strength. Finally I am confident that this is achievable and when it comes to price comparison with Glass tank and plywood tank I am sure that glass tank is a lot more money than plywood thank. I am building tank which is 48" wide 30"high and 36"deep and I got estimate from three glass tank builders 3000 and this is only front starphire glass and drill for closed loop. Cheapest estimate I got is 2900. With plywood tank I have more option with customize my tank...

It would be worthwhile to also get an estimate for a piece of acrylic instead of glass, just for comparison.

This looks really great, planning on a plywood tank myself with an internal sump. Is your sump plywood too? How did you do the wood baffles glue only?

Hi! fairly new member here. Would like to build something similar....Any updates on how the great looking tank is holding up? Thanks for such a great post, by the way.

I know this is an ancient thread... But I am gonna bring it back to life...

I have been doing a ton of research and I am gonna attempt a plywood tank myself... 300+ gallons..

I am gonna use "pond sheild" epoxy I think... Instead of liquid rubber... It's a bit more expensive.. But comes in any color and when it dries.. It's very smooth and suction cups stick to it perfectly...
But.. I am wondering how the OPs tanks with the liquid rubber and paint held up... If it is still good.. I may go that route... But at the same time.. The pond shield is only about 100 bucks more and silicone sticks to it with no problem at all..

Anyways I hope the OP sees this and will respond with an update for all of us

BTW everyone... Including the OP built some beautiful tanks... Good job!!

I am going to star buying material next week..

I want to go 8 foot wide... And probably 30 x 30 deep and tall.. I still have not totally decided on that yet

There is a long in depth thread on the DIY section where a guy built his tank and used pond shield, boy was it beautiful!!!!

Pond shield is exactly what I am looking at for my project. I'm thinking of doing something with internal dimensions of 34" wide x 102" long x 54" tall. The bottom 2' I intend to block off most flow with a false bottom and turn it into a huge cryptic filtration zone akin to what Steve Tyree advocates.

I would love to see anyone show that they have any sort of long term success with a pond shield and plywood tank.

I like that idea.. Almost like those under gravel filters.. Well somewhat

I am hoping for the same... Someone to pop up with "I build one 15 years ago... Here it is.. Still holding up"
