35mm slr cameras

Hey what cameras do you guys use. I was looking at the nikon n55 but they are going out of production. so what do you guys suggest

Depends on what kinds of pictures you want to take and how you're gonna use it. Many of the consumer grade models have lots of advanced features and will give you a lot of bang for the buck. The professional models give you the advanced features, faster speeds (shutter lag, film advance etc.) and extreme ruggedness.
But the camera body is really only a medium sized percentage of what you'll be spending over time-- it's the lenses that matter the most. That's where the smart money is spent.
Try to go to a camera store and play with all the different [brand] bodies in your price range. You'll probably find that one brand is easier to use and feels better in your hands.

i will be using it for aquarium photos and surfing so im going to get a macro lense and a telephoto lense. I dont want to drop 3k on a camera though.

Pro film bodies are not nearly as expensive as pro dlsr bodies. Regardless, three to four hundred bucks gets you a perfectly good body. And then the lenses... like I said before- that's where the quality will come from, aside from the abilities of the photographer. Choose wisely!
For aquarium and surfing pics you will be fine with the N55 or N80 if you want a few more bells and whistles. The Canon equivalents would probably be the Rebel and Elan 7.

ps- I bought a used professional body (EOS 1n) way back when- saved a few hundred bucks and it served me well til I went digital. Now it's collecting dust :p

Frisco, 35mm :).

I use a 20D all the time now, but I started on a Canon F1 (full manual, pre-EOS), and still have my Elan 7e. The nice thing about the 35mm world is that you never buy more megapixels. The chassis doesn't effect quality (well, it does, but so minutely, we'll never see it as amatuers. You pay more for features. My Elan 7e can shoot about 3 frames per second, and has a minimum shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second. The Canon EOS-1 can shoot 11 frames per second (yes, the whole role in under three seconds) and can shoot as fast as 1/8000th of a second (unless either of those stats has changed). My Elan 7e has 7 auto focus points, the EOS 1 has 45. And on and on.

The Elan 7N is $299. The EOS-1 (Canon's flagship) is $1650. Both these prices are without lenses, and as I'm sure you know, the lenses are interchangeable, even with digital bodies, unless you pick up one of Canon's EF-S lenses, which is digital only.

Edit: GregR was typing at the same time as me. My Elan hasn't seen daylight since I bought the 20D over a year ago, either.

i use a canon EOS30D digital slr, 8.2megapixel, 9 point AF, spot metering, upto 1/8000 shutter speed,( great 4 sports photography). nice new features over the 20D including 2.5inch screen, picture styles, ect. a fair investment a $2700-$3000, but in the end its very much worth it. beautiful camara, all u'll ever need. p.s im not a sales rep for canon! i swear :)

jwedehase.

in your post are you talking about the digital EOS1 or the film ? because the digital version is full blown pro model and around $15000! ( 16.7 megapixel) wow!
