I have been running a 360 gal freshwater tank for 6 years and would like to convert to fowlr salt.I need suggestions on extra equiptment required for heavy stock tank. I would like to incorporate my pumps and canisters if possible.
-360 gal all glass
-panworld ps 250 pump powering 2xnuclear pleated and carbon canisters. --1900gl/hr
-genx mak4 pump powers 1x bio disc nuclear canister and 1000w read sea inline heater.
-2x coralife 48" power compact 8x65w lighting.

I think as long as your equipment is rated for saltwater, you can use it. I'd invest in 1-1.5 lbs live rock per gallon and the best protein skimmer you can afford, and call it pretty much good to go.

Mike,
Thanks for asking but I think that a 360 gallon is too small for most saltwater fish. You could have maybe 1 small(1")Angel fish or 1 small(.5") trigger fish. Please just keep your goldfish and don't torture any saltwater fish with your small tank....

Thanks,
Poseidon

dump the bio wheels and use the canisters empty for water movement, just put media in for polishing the water or running some charcoal, or some such, otherwise just empty. Nitrate factories, they are. Plus think about a sump to increase volume and hide your equipment in. It wont be long and all your FW stuff will be in the closet with Aunt Barry, and you will be adding closed loops and loc line and lights. Read Read Read, buy buy buy, If you live in the Good Ole U.S. of A. Pres. Bush will be sending you a check to help you out a little. RO/DI water is a must too.

Cannisters can be ok for fish depending on how you do the media.

Honestly, a protein skimmer is a huge labor saver and there are some messy fish I would be cautious of keeping without a good skimmer - some fish just make a huge mess when eating and put a lot of organics in the system.

If you would prefer many smaller fish(or larger fish that aren't voracious predators) - blennies, gobies, chromis, damselfish, smaller angels, smaller wrasses, tangs you might not need to go overboard on a skimmer. You might not even need one at all if you don't mind a little weekly/monthly maintenance.

If you want lionfish, triggers, puffers, groupers I would say buy the best skimmer you can afford, because these guys are great but they can also be filtration nightmares.

I have been pretty happy in general with carbon filtration in my salt water tanks, so I would say that won't hurt to keep.

thanks for the info guys-I have moved this tread to the large reef forum, and there is more info on my system if you would like to look
