360 gallon Peninsula Bar Build…

^^ Thanks guys... Thanks for the sugestion jhardain, that's why I didn't move the shelf up and I left the space under the skimmer pump too. I haven't decided what kind of foam or padding to use. I thought about some 10lb carpet pading, but im not sure how it will hold up. I would like to find a piece of rubber, kind of like whats on a tractor trailer mud flap. A piece of cork might work good too.

I did a leak test last night and I have 3 small leaks. Two are in the same joint on two different pipes. I think a little Teflon tape will fix it. One is on the bottom of the pump housing, on one of the closed loops. I'm going to swap it with the sump return. The flow is good. I'm just not sure I like the eductors they seem to work ok, but at $25 each I'm not sure I'm all that impressed. I’m going to put them on ¾ “flex pipe.

The electrical is done. I have 4 dedicated circuits to run the equipment. The four MH’s will run on 1 circuit, the two CL pumps will run on one circuit. The sump, skimmer and nitrate reactor, calcium reactor and Co2 will run on 1 circuit. The chiller and heaters will have there own circuits.

I guess its time to start making up water. I think I’m going to work on the aquascape today after I get the leaks fixed.

Hi, let me tell you first that your system is coming along nicely, instalation looks great.

I'm planning on a system myself, not as big, but will also have four dedicated circuits and as I was reading your post was wondering what was your reasoning on dividing the equipment like that, in case of a problem with any of the circuits it seems that you will either:

- have no lights and/or
- no flow and/or
- no mechanical filtration and/or
- no chiller/heater

Wouldn´t it be better to mix equipment a little among the 4 circuits to prevent a total loss of one or more of the systems mentioned above?

Remember Murphy always works against us.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers!

Your right about Murphy’s Law. The 4 T5's will be on the circuit with the CL pumps if I use them and I’m sure I will. I haven't installed them yet so I forgot to list them. If the CL pumps go out the sump pump and skimmer will still be going and if the sump goes out the CL's will be running with the T5’s. If the MH’s go out it will save me on the power bill. Lol… I'm not real worried about the light going out, I'm more worried about water flow. I know the sump return isn't a lot of flow, but I hope it will keep it alive thought a short power outage. The grand plan is to have a generator on the CL's, sump and T5's in case the power is out for more than a few hours. I want the generator to kick on when the power goes out. We don't really have a problem with power outages I just figured better safe than sorry. We do have a hurricane come along ever now and then.

Ok, guys I need some help deciding on a chiller. What do ya’ll think about this one? http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...duct_Code=PC-C-050&Category_Code=pacificcoast

I’m not sure how much I will need to cool the tank since it’s still in the build stage. My house stays around 73 F. We do have some hot days down here in south Alabama. Anyone have any advice? Would I be better off to wait and see how what temp the tank runs?

Thanks stylolvr, I was thinking by the time I buy 4 good heaters that would cost $240 I could buy a chiller/ heater for $900 and save the wasted $240. That would be $240 toward a controller. I guess it would be more like a $1000 after I bought a pump to feed the chiller. It would be good not to have to have one.

I have to figure out how I'm going to feed the two reactors. I have thought about feeding off of the skimmer pump since I have it turned down a little. The reactors should not use that much water flow should they.

Anyone have any advice?

Any way to build a manifold to control the flow to each reactor and skimmer? What pump do you have servicing the skimmer?

I'm using a Iwaki MD- 40RT. It may have 1' of head pressure. I think I could T off and put a 1/4" tube on it with a John Guest valve, or some kind of micro valve, to control the flow. I've never used a reactor of any kind. I'm not sure how much flow they need.

Well, it may be a while before I can post pictures, work has blocked photobucket.com again. My home pc broke, I ordered a new XPS laptop from Dell and received it on March 3nd by March 6th I had already spent several hours on the phone with Dell trying to get it to work right. Long story short the video card went out, the Blue-Ray (BD/DVD/CD) wouldn’t work, or do anything it should have done so I sent the POS back.

The tank is coming along; I have been running Ro/Di water for 5 days. I hope it is full tomorrow. I’ve been mixing it in two 44gallon Brute trash cans and then dumping it into the tank. It is about 3 inches from the top.

The plumbing is almost done. I forgot to put a check valve on the return so I need to take care of that. I got the calcium reactor and the nitrate reactor plumbed. I used two 3/4” SFM x ½” TFM tee’s and plumbed them into the skimmer pump. I use a ½” TM to ¼ quick disconnect JG fitting to run the 1/4” tubing into the reactors. I installed a ¼” JG quick disconnect valve to control the flow. It seems to be working fine. All the other plumbing is good to go. I was going to order a new Pacific Coast 1/2 HP Inline Chiller, but I happen to find a used one in the for sale section so I bought it instead. I need to figure out what pump I’m going to run on it. I think I’m going to use one of the Mag-Drive 24’s on the chiller. Then put a Reeflo Hammerhead on one of the closed loops so I can have two returns on the other end of the tank.

I have 500lbs of sand it’s about a 4” sand bed. I used 6 fifty pound bags of play sand (300lbs) and 10 twenty pound bags of live sand (200lbs). I have the aquascape started I used about 250 pounds of base rock. I’m still moving it around hear and there. I hope to have some live rock this week to seed the base rock. I’m not sure if I’m going to order online or drive 2 hours to a decent reef store.

The bar is waiting on me to get finished. I talked to my carpenter today. He has hurt his back and can’t do anything for another week. I’m going to close the right end of the stand off and have vents installed so I can run the chiller under there.

That’s about it for now. I will try to get some pics up asap. I will have to use my phone so it may take a little while. I’m not sure what I’m going to do about a computer.

WOW hershell....I saw this thread a while back and I had seen the ARC ad where the guy selling this tank was sitting in it. (I think this is same tank) and I have seen you here in the Alabama forums a few times. Now today seeing your thread the light bulb went off and I put all of those things together. What a nice build! Going to the beach in 2 or 3 weeks if I can talk the wife into it and you would allow it I would love to see this beast.

^^^ Thanks… I bought the tank from “skilos1” in Birmingham. You can send me a pm or something when it gets close to time for your beach trip. If I’m off it will be cool for ya’ll to stop by. We are working on the house so it is a mess.

I put 3 green chromis and 1 serpent star in the tank today. They all seem real happy they all ate twice. I was going to buy 8 to 10 chromis, but they only had 3. I really need to get some premium cured live rock to seed the tank with. Thanks goodness I’m off this weekend, I hope I can do some coral/ fish shopping. I would really like to get some frags. I hope the chiller makes it this week.

I had a little surprise this morning when I got home from work. The floor was wet and I looked for 30 + minutes trying to figure out what happened. I left the skimmer running just to make sure everything was working right. Well I didn’t adjust the skimmer because there wasn’t anything in the tank and no need to.(WRONG) I forgot to put the collection cup hose in a bucket. The skimmer flooded and ran out onto the floor. It wasn’t too bad, but it was a PIA to clean up. I had to take the rug outside, it rained all day so I left it in the garage. I was scared at first I thought the tank had a hole in it or something. I did by it used.

I’ve also figured out I have a 1.5” drain and it can’t keep up with the return pump. I will be putting in a 2” bulkhead. The return pump is at about ½ throttle and I want it to be full throttle. I’ve also figured out I don’t like the eductors they really restrict the flow. I added a return to the middle and end of the tank.

I would paint those treat lumber 4x4's. Treated lumber and reef tanks =no no.

Love the tank, Same as mine. Wish I could get to mine from all sides like you. Would of made it a ton easier to scape.

Thanks guys....

Kreeger.... I have been thinking about painting the inside white, but I wasn't sure what kind of paint to use.

ct103.. Are you going to the Montgomery Sunday? I'm going to ask Shane if he is going.

The fish are doing good so far. I let the lights run about 8hr today and the temp got up there a bit 86 +/- thats with no canopy. My chiller should be here Friday. Maybe I can have it going by Monday. I think I'm going to buy a dehumidifer for the room. I can tell a big difference in the livingroom when I walk in the front door. I'm sure it won't be as bad when the stand and hood gets finished, but I don't want my house turning into a mold farm.

I thought I would post an update.

So far everything is going good. I have made a few changes. I have the chiller installed and set at 79*F. I used a Mag-Drive 24 for the circulation pump. The Bio Denitrator is installed and seems to be doing its job. I still need to hook up the calcium reactor I haven’t taken the time to do that. The Eheim pump is leaking. I had to install a new shaft and I’m sure the cover just not tight.

I bought two new pumps for the closed loops. The Mag-Drives were just too loud. I replaced them with two Iwaki 100’s. WOW is all I can say; there is a big difference in water flow. I have only installed one so far and I think it moves more water that both of the Mag-Drive 24’s. I have a Mag-Drive 24 as a sump return that I had to valve down about 40% because the overflow wouldn’t keep up. I bought a 2” bulk head to replace the 1.5” that is in there now. I hope it will allow me to turn the return all the way up.

I have bought about 60 lbs of live rock to seed the base rock with. The tank has cycled I have a few things in there. I have some coralline algae growth starting to show up. The base rock I used was old live rock. It was bleached, rinsed and sun dried for months and I’m starting to see the coralline coming back on it as well. I would have never thought it would come back.

Fish:
2 green chromis
2 cardinals
1 sailfin tang

Corals:
1 small hammer
1 small torch
1 colt leather
2 yellow leather
1 small zoo
1 green star
Several mushrooms, they were on the live rock.

Inverts
40 small crabs, red and blue leg
2 brittle starfish
