is that a snowflake eel in your tank hiding under that rock?

Are you talking about her prawn goby? I don't see an SFE in any of the pics.

Oh, that's just my little Stonogobiops nematodes. That is his burrow. He's a friendly little guy. I love gobies :) I only have 3 gobies in this tank right now. I got the chiller hooked up today, got the temp down to 72*. I think I will take it down to 70* tomorrow, then I go on vacation for a week and a half. I will be worried the whole time.

I shot an email to seahorse.com about their whitei. I knew they had them occasionally, but I wrote them off because they say "keep these whities in the same conditions as your erectus." Ummm, no. Whitei are subtropical. They claim that capensis optimal temperature is 70 or 72. That's outrageous.

Does anyone know what the "optimal" temperature for Catalina gobies is? I can go as low as 69* without bothering the other inhabitants.

As of 2004, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was keeping them at 58-60, acknowledging that the temp would need to be raised closer to 70 temporarily to induce breeding. Bob Fenner suggests 64-71 http://wetwebmedia.com/lythrypnus.htm All I can say from personal experience is that the waters around Catalina can definately get on the chilly side, so I'd err on the side of caution and keep things at 69, especially since you're planning temperate or subtropical SH as well. And when you get the SH and get rid of some of the other tankmates, I'd see if you could take the temp down around 66, at least for a good part of the year.

Thats going to be a really nice tank once completed, there are some really beautiful species I would love to get, but unfortunately a bunch of them are really cold water species.. like the cat. goby.

I got the temp down to 70, then went on vacation. I'm going to drop it further this week, and go from there. I'll post some pics soon to show how well the coral is doing at the lower temps.

I can't find the seahorses I want. If anyone knows where I can get some Hippocampus whitei, let me know. Thanks!

you'd better hurry and get your seahorses. i set my tank up for seahorses and couldnt resist putting a couple things here and there. now i have a full blown reef where a SH would have no chance to survive. just gives me another reason to setup another tank.

LOL! That's exactly what I'm going to do...

I have a 55 gallon with some freshwater in it...I can easily convert it to a reef, I even have the lights, skimmer, etc for it. That way I can really jack down the temp on this tank for the Catalinas (who are paired and courting, btw) and any other cool temperate stuff I come across. Then maybe, someday, temperate seahorses will be available in the USA again.
